Inflammatory bowel disease IBD

Rice bran fiber has fructo-oligosaccharides - a pre-biotic that helps friendly bacteria to proliferate in the gastrointestinal environment and improves intestinal and colon health (Tomlin and Read, 1988). Recent studies in humans (Kahlon and Chow, 1997) have revealed that rice bran fiber not only normalizes bowel function, but also helps in conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and Crohn s disease, and lowers the lipid levels. Rice bran fiber has been shown to significantly reduce renal stones (Jahnen et al., 1992). It is a good source of fiber in weight loss programs and therapeutic fiber diets for diabetics and heart patients. Fiber diets prevent cancer of the colon and large bowel, control obesity and improve bowel function. [Pg.352]

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses both Crohn s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Both disorders are associated with inflammation of various regions within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Differences exist between UC and CD with regard to the regions of the GI tract that may be affected as well as in the distribution and depth of inflammation. Some... [Pg.281]

Although the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains unclear, increasing evidence suggests that the enteric microflora plays a central role in this process. The distal ileum and the colon are the areas with the highest bacterial concentrations and represent the sites of inflammation in IBD similarly pouchitis appears to be associated with bacterial overgrowth and dysbiosis. [Pg.96]

There are two forms of idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) ulcerative colitis, a mucosal inflammatory condition confined to the rectum and colon, and Crohn s disease, a transmural inflammation of GI mucosa that may occur in any part of the GI tract. The etiologies of both conditions are unknown, but they may have a common pathogenetic mechanism. [Pg.295]

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) comprises several diseases, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn s disease. Ulcerative cohtis is a disease of the colon, originating in the rectum and extending proximally to a variable extent. It frequently affects the entire colon but never... [Pg.174]

In terms of mineral content, potato is best known as an important source of dietary potassium, which plays a fundamental role in acid-base regulation and fluid balance and is required for optimal functioning of the heart, kidneys, muscles, nerves, and digestive systems. Health benefits of sufficient potassium intake include reduced risk of hypokalemia, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, stroke, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), kidney stones, and asthma. A high intake of potassium and low intake of sodium have been hypothesized to reduce the risk of stroke (Larsson et al., 2008 Swain et al., 2008). However, most American women 31-50 years old consume no more than half of the recommended amoimt of potassium and men s intake is only moderately higher (lOM, 2004). [Pg.409]

Antidiarrheal agents may be used safely in patients with mild to moderate acute diarrhea. However, these agents should not be used in patients with bloody diarrhea, high fever, or systemic toxicity because of the risk of worsening the underlying condition. They should be discontinued in patients whose diarrhea is worsening despite therapy. Antidiarrheals are also used to control chronic diarrhea caused by such conditions as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). [Pg.1320]

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) comprises two distinct disorders ulcerative colitis and Crohn s disease. The etiology and pathogenesis of these disorders remains unknown. For this reason, pharmacologic treatment of inflammatory bowel disorders often involves drugs that belong to different therapeutic classes and have different but nonspecific mechanisms of anti-inflammatory action. Drugs used in inflammatory bowel disease are chosen on the basis of disease severity, responsiveness, and drug... [Pg.1325]

A major indication for colon-specific drug delivery is in the treatment of local disorders of the colon, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD which includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn s disease) and carcinoma of the colon. The colon can also be used as an absorption site for the delivery of drags to the systemic circulation. Although absorption from the colon is generally considerably lower than from the small intestine, systemic drag delivery via the colon is associated with a number of advantages, including ... [Pg.161]
