Since its conception, the dynamic filter has been widely reported and further developed. Most European designs are comprised of a multistage disk arrangement (Fig. 28) with both the rotating and stationary elements covered with filter cloth, thus utilising the space inside the pressure vessel. Such filters have been found (29) to be from 5 to 25 times more productive in mass of dry cake per unit area and time than filter presses for the same moisture content of the final slurry. In some cases, the moisture content with the dynamic filter was actually lower than with a filter press. Diacetone-L-sorbose (DAS) is oxidized at elevated temperatures in dilute sodium hydroxide in the presence of a catalyst (nickel chloride for bleach or palladium on carbon for air) or by electrolytic methods. Unproven Technology. When a project involves new or unproven technology, the capital estimates tend to understate the development, constmction, and start-up costs. SFA has been traditionally used to measure the forces between modified mica surfaces. Before the JKR theory was developed, Israelachvili and Tabor [57] measured the force versus distance (F vs. d) profile and pull-off force (Pf) between steric acid monolayers assembled on mica surfaces. The authors calculated the surface energy of these monolayers from the Hamaker constant determined from the F versus d data. In a later paper on the measurement of forces between surfaces immersed in a variety of electrolytic solutions, Israelachvili [93] reported that the interfacial energies in aqueous electrolytes varies over a wide range (0.01-10 mJ/m-).
