Documentation process

The QAP system additionally was developped for inspection documentation purposes to meet the modern requirements in process documentation (ISO 9000). It is the basic system required to install a fully automated inspection by a camera system and image processing. 

After preparation, a checklist may be used by less expert engineers than the preparers for inspecting the process areas to compare the process equipment and operations with the checklist oidrcr on hardcopy or laptop computer. The analyst fills in the checklist according to observations from their inspection, process documentation, and interviews with operators and their perceptions. 

Documenting the Process. The net effect of these steps is a process description, defined in terms of customers and suppliers and their interaction. Next, the team can summarize that description in the form of a process flowchart, to illustrate the roles and responsibilities of each process stakeholder (see Figure 6-8). This chart provides the basis for developing standard operating procedures, or other process documentation, that the company can incorporate into existing practices.

Each PSM system can then be examined to determine what system modifications (if any) are needed to address the new issues. For example, the process hazard assessment system might be modified to include participation by industrial hygienists to identify potential sources of exposure. Some process safety management systems (e.g., process documentation) may require no modification to support a wider scope.

The experience base provided by the analysis team members is just as important as the written process documentation for identifying and assessing possible incident scenarios. Tearn members will need to make estimates of how often certain failures occur, and how effective responses will be to specific upset conditions. 

Appropriate skills must be made available during the development of process documentation. For example, for a large facility, process engineers, chemists, and health and safety specialists should be involved. These staff members should have access to appropriate information sources, including ... 

The management system for process definition documentation should ensure that the contents of the process documentation package are accurate and complete. A suitable review and quality assurance program should be implemented for the process documentation. This may involve a hierarchical review process, and/or using external experts in a review capacity. 

The design assessments and basis of safety must be recorded and available for consultation, and the process must be operated as required. The operating phase involves two sets of process documentation—the detailed technical documentation, and safe operating instructions (HSE 2000) for every operational phase, including startup, shutdown, maintenance and emergency operations. 

Sulfonation of n-paraffins to produce SAS is a totally different process involving ultraviolet (UV) catalysed reactors and much more complex processing steps than the standard sulfonation processes documented above. This has limited the availability and accessibility of this technology and consequently its broader use. Sulfonated paraffins are only produced in Europe in limited amounts. 

The certification activities include a series of process documentation and qualification studies that start with the initial installation of a sterilization system and continue as process engineering changes or new or revised product introductions are required. Qualification activities comprise installation, operational, change, and performance phases.

Using a column that can operate at high temperatures, a correlation is made between retention times and boiling temperatures for a series of oligomers. The sample to be distilled is then run under the same chromatographic conditions. Software using the chromatogram reproduces a distribution curve identical to that which would be obtained from the mixture if it were distilled, a much longer process (document SGE 712-0546 and -0547).

Process documentation of this type also promotes product consistency, lessening the likelihood of producing unacceptable product which must be discarded. Moreover, procedural guidelines can be helpful in reducing waste generation during maintenance or emergency shutdowns.
