Manual procedure

Visual and Manual Tests. Synthetic fibers are generally mixed with other fibers to achieve a balance of properties. Acryhc staple may be blended with wool, cotton, polyester, rayon, and other synthetic fibers. Therefore, as a preliminary step, the yam or fabric must be separated into its constituent fibers. This immediately estabUshes whether the fiber is a continuous filament or staple product. Staple length, brightness, and breaking strength wet and dry are all usehil tests that can be done in a cursory examination. A more critical identification can be made by a set of simple manual procedures based on burning, staining, solubiUty, density deterrnination, and microscopical examination. [Pg.276]

As microprocessor-based controls displaced hardwired electronic and pneumatic controls, the impac t on plant safety has definitely been positive. When automated procedures replace manual procedures for routine operations, the probability of human errors leading to hazardous situations is lowered. The enhanced capability for presenting information to the process operators in a timely manner and in the most meaningful form increases the operator s awareness of the current conditions in the process. Process operators are expected to exercise due diligence in the supervision of the process, and timely recognition of an abnormal situation reduces the likelihood that the situation will progress to the hazardous state. Figure 8-88 depicts the layers of safety protection in a typical chemical jdant. [Pg.795]

Although mechanical sampling methods are to be the focus of attention, manual sampling methods are also employed for practical sample collecdion in commerce. Techniques of mechanical sampling should be emulated as closely as possible for best results with sampling by manual procedures. [Pg.1756]

During this assessment phase, deliberately look for programs and elements. The most likely sources are Operating Manuals/Procedures, PSM, and ESH Manuals, and PSM and ESH specialists. In each case, your assessment team should seek out descriptions of the objectives of each... [Pg.56]

The introduction of the sample into the adsorbent layer is a critical process in HPTLC. For most quantitative work a platinum-iridium capillary of fixed volume (100 or 200 nL), sealed into a glass support capillary of larger bore, provides a convenient spotting device. The capillary tip is polished to provide a smooth, planar surface of small area (ca 0.05 mm2), which when used with a mechanical applicator minimises damage to the surface of the plate spotting by manual procedures invariably damages the surface. [Pg.232]

Documentation requirements - Create quality policy, quality manual, procedures, and document control and distribution function. Retain records for the expected lifetime of the device or a minimum of 2 years... [Pg.232]

The pH (or pI) term of the Nemst equation contains the electrode slope factor as a linear temperature relationship. This means that a pH determination requires the instantaneous input, either manual or automatic, of the prevailing temperature value into the potentiometer. In the manual procedure the temperature compensation knob is previously set on the actual value. In the automatic procedure the adjustment is permanently achieved in direct connection with a temperature probe immersed in the solution close to the indicator electrode the probe usually consists of a Pt or Ni resistance thermometer or a thermistor normally based on an NTC resistor. An interesting development in 1980 was the Orion Model 611 pH meter, in which the pH electrode itself is used to sense the solution temperature (see below). [Pg.94]

Jin and Atrens (1987) have elucidated the structure of the passive film formed on stainless steels during immersion in 0.1 M NaCl solution for various immersion times, employing XPS and ion etching techniques. The measured spectra consist of composite peaks produced by electrons of slightly different energy if the element is in several different chemical states. Peak deconvolution (which is a non-trivial problem) has to be conducted, and these authors used a manual procedure based on the actual individual peaks shapes and peak positions as recorded by Wagner et al. (1978). The procedure is illustrated in Figure 2.8 for iron. [Pg.33]

To this must be added the 10% to 20% savings in direct lab productivity to be achieved through elimination of repetitive clerical work and through computerization of inefficient and error prone manual procedures. [Pg.11]

Conceded - we can successively project anisotropic data to different directions, carry out the manual procedure for each direction, and, finally recombine the curves. But even if we replace the manual procedure by an automated one, the combination of curves turns out to be not contiguous There is no smooth surface anymore. [Pg.154]

These are solved by matrix manipulations. Programs are in POLYMATH, CONSTANTINIDES AND CHAPRA CANALE. When the number of equations is not large, a manual procedure can be used to eliminate one variable at a time by reduction of the leading coefficients to unity and appropriate additions and subtractions of the equations. [Pg.15]

The intent is to deliver a business model, given that you have a variety of components, each with its own model. The components have been developed separately. You need to connect them, whether through a live interface, by enabling files to be written by one and read by another, or with a manual procedure. [Pg.575]

The first so-called automated analysers were developed to carry out analyses by replacing manual pipetting by the mechanical transfer of fixed volumes of sample and reagents. They were designed to mimic the manipulations of a convential manual procedure and sometimes had the capacity to measure the amount of reaction product, usually spectrophotometrically. The... [Pg.210]

This approach represents a significant advance on the philosophy adopted by other instrument manufacturers. Once the utihty of the approach has been proved in industrial laboratories, it will be interesting to see how far the philosophy wiU develop and solve problems directly, rather than simply mimicking manual procedures. [Pg.42]

The manual procedures for TDS, TDS-ROE, TSS and TS are described in 22 separate steps in Table 6.3. The automated procedures follow these same steps. The robotic system shown in Fig. 6.S has a Zymate Laboratory Automation System at the heart of the system design. [Pg.177]

The manual procedure for determination of total nitrogen by chemiluminescence involves preparing the standards from a stock solution, diluting the samples, injecting the standards into the combustion furnace for analysis, and calculation of the nitrogen content of the samples. The calculation is based on the signal from the diluted sample compared to the standard curve and the dilution factor for the sample. [Pg.184]

The robotic automation of the procedure reduces the analysis time by a factor of >3 and the solvent consumption by 80—90%. The method detection limit and precision of the automated procedure are better than current manual procedures. [Pg.190]

The conformity assessment body could be a laboratory, the third-party could be the accreditor coming to your laboratory to inspect, whether the required documentation, manuals, procedures, or personnel are appropriate to perform the specific conformity assessment task e.g. determine PAHs by HPLC. If the laboratory (the conformity assessment body) and the personnel can do the job then accreditation might be granted. Being accredited can be of competitive advantage for laboratories. Sometimes contractors require the (analytical) work to be carried out in an accredited laboratory. Accreditation gives confidence to the customer that the laboratory will fulfil the requirements that are necessary for the work to be done competently. You find more about accreditation in chapter 2 of this book. [Pg.5]

The ammonium extracted by the potassium chloride reagent is analysed by steam distillation. This may be carried out using an automatic instrument such as the Kjeltec Auto 1035 Analyzer (USDA, 1996, pp. 203-210), or a micro (or semi-micro) steam distillation unit such as that described by Bremner and Keeney (1965), or the readily available Markham still. We will describe the manual procedure. [Pg.65]

The following manual procedure is based on MAFF/ADAS, 1985, pp. 1 83-1 85 (with Crown Copyright Permission). [Pg.84]

In modern software packages random number generators should work satisfactorily. However, if seeds are set manually, procedures should ensure that repetition of sequences is avoided. [Pg.161]

Within the last two years since the Sequencer of Beckman Instruments became generally available, the automated method has been successfully applied predominantly to comparisons of homologous proteins such as the immunoglobulins. Elucidation of the sequence of 20 to 30 N-terminal residues in peptides as long as the L-chains, comprising 214 amino acids or the H-chains with more than 400 residues would have been impossible to achieve by the manual procedure without prior cleavage of the molecules and isolation of the N-terminal regions. [Pg.25]
