External communication

Modern frequency converters now make it possible to handle smaller automation tasks via the motor drive alone. Here, the controller intended for controlling the inverter assumes monitoring and control tasks that it can communicate externally via the available (or expandable) I/O. Moreover, it is also possible to connect various bus systems. Sometimes the functioning of small programmable logic controls can be integrated into the inverter. Parameters and control function programming can be entered via a small user interface. It may be even more convenient to connect to a laptop with an RS 232 interface.

The TA-V EPP describes the provisions for prompt notification of emergence-response personnel and other organizations both on-site and off-site. It describes the system for notification of all on-site personnel and the required response. All messages and notifications are accomplished in a prearranged manner as prescribed in the TAV EPP. Communications external to SNL/NM are handled through the SNL/NM EOC, as described in the SNL/NM EP. 

Telecommunications systems will include internal communications within the platforms (telephone, radio, walkie-talkie, air-ground-air, navigation, public address) and external systems (telephone, telex, fax, telemetry, VFIF radio, and possibly satellite links). These systems are designed to handle the day-to-day communications as well as emergency situations. 

To meet the demand for flexibility the basic electronic components of the scanner system are build as individual modules (Master, Link, Driver and Motor Modules) containing control-and communication electronics. The modules connect through external cables. 

A typical transputer architecture. The transputer (sometimes referred to as a computer on a chip) has four input/output links (0, 1, 2, 3) to other transputers, a channel for inputting/requesting data (event link), some built-in random-access memory, an interface to the main operating system (clock, boot, etc.), and an external memory interface. Internal communication is via a bus. 

Work is being done to create uniform standards for exchange of information between analytical iastmmentation and external (host) computers, but the diversity and the competitive nature of the iastmmentation marketplace tend to impede these efforts, leading to an environment of constant change and a need for new and rewritten programs to communicate between LIMS and the automated iastmments.

Ca.rdia.c-AssistDevices. The principal cardiac-assist device, the intra-aortic balloon pump (lABP), is used primarily to support patients before or after open-heart surgery, or patients who go into cardiogenic shock. As of the mid-1990s, the lABP was being used more often to stabilize heart attack victims, especially in community hospitals which do not provide open-heart surgery. The procedure consists of a balloon catheter inserted into the aorta which expands and contracts to assist blood flow into the circulatory system and to reduce the heart s workload by about 20%. The disposable balloon is powered by an external pump console. 

Finally, the laboratory expends significant effort communicating results to both internal and external customers. Production, quaUty assurance, and purchasing all have various information needs ranging from the simple pass /fail decisions to statistical summaries of the data and suppHer product quahty. Customers expect to receive lot analyses in the form of a COA and often also want their own product-specific information on the document as well. This information can automatically be appHed to the COA if entered into the LIMS. Often, a quaUty-conscious customer wants information about the product in the form of process capabiUty or control charts. Using LIMS, these charts can be provided on demand. 

Using the PC for control requires installation of a board into the expansion slot in the computer, or the PC can be connected to an external I/O module using a standard communication port on the PC (RS-232, RS-422, or IEEE-488). The controller card/module supports 16- or 32-bit microprocessors. Standardization and high volume in the PC market has produced a large selection of hardware and software tools for PC controllers.

Communicating the importance of PSM. This includes internal as well as external communications and may be part of broader corporate communications strategy or a freestanding effort. 

Top-level support is often most valuable when it is highly visible. Perhaps the most useful role senior management can take on behalf of PSM is to endorse it explicitly—both inside the company and externally. Senior managers active participation in communications about PSM lends cred -ibility and generates awareness of PSM as a company priority in ways that not even the most dedicated staff team can achieve. 

Communications addresses both internal and external audiences. Both are important and neither should be ignored. However, the extent and the nature of their interest are often very different, and so are their information needs.

External communications quarterly and annual reports, press releases, new product announcements, existing product information and updates, customer newsletters, community newsletters, etc. 

External communications about PSM can parallel internal efforts. For example, the CEO or other senior sponsor might take advantage of a public speaking opportunity or a media interview to discuss the company s commitment to PSM and the ways it has devised to implement it. 

In this case, the operations within a sequence are further defined according to various criteria such as whether they involve reception or transition of information, storage of information, manual control responses, inspections, and decisions. However, some other dimensions of an operation may require particular emphasis such as whether information is transmitted electronically, by external communication etc. A type of vertical axis can still be used to represent sequential order and if required this can incorporate the same timing information as temporal OSDs. 

The whole range of error types that could occur at each task step are described in Figure 4.16. The terms action errors and checking errors are self-explanatory. Retrieval errors refer to the retrieval of infonnation either from an external source (e.g., a chart recorder or a procedure) or from memory. Transmission/ communication errors refer to communications among individuals either directly or via written communications. Selection/choice errors refer to making incorrect choices among alternative operations, for example, manual instead of automatic.

It may be noted that the pressure measuring devices (a) to (e) all measure a pressure difference AP(— Pj — P ). In the case of the Bourdon gauge (0, the pressure indicated is the difference between that communicated by the system to the tube and the external (ambient) pressure, and this is usually referred to as the gauge pressure. It is then necessary to add on the ambient pressure in order to obtain the (absolute) pressure. Even the mercury barometer measures, not atmospheric pressure, but the difference between atmospheric pressure and the vapour pressure of mercury which, of course, is negligible. Gauge pressures are not. however, used in the SI System of units.
