In 1998, the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) recognised that business and industry would play a crucial role in the global quest for sustainable development and, on that occasion, UNCSD made reference to the OECD Risk Assessment Programme on brominated flame retardants as a model example of a global, voluntary chemical industry initiative. [Pg.137]

This is a 40-chapter action plan for sustainable development. It established tasks, targets, costs, etc., for actions which combine economie development and environmental proteetion. In the Priorities for Action of the IFCS in the year 2000, the target year 2008 was set for implementation of a harmonised system, and this was endorsed by the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002. The system adopted in late 2002 was revised in 2005 and 2006 (UNECE 2007). Responsibility rests with the United Nations Economic and Social Council Sub-Committee of Experts on the GHS under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The target of full GHS implementation by 2008 has not been reached, but implementation is well underway. Major actors have set deadlines, such as the United States (transportation 2010) and the European Union (2010 for classification of substances and 2015 for mixtures). [Pg.194]

Environmental management has moved on to embrace the concept of Sustainable Development. The 1987 World Commission on Environment/ Development under the guidance of Gro Harlem Brundtland (Prime Minister of Norway) made Sustainable Development the theme of its entire report called Our Common Future. It defined Sustainable Development as development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In the UK in the mid-1990s the Department of Trade and Industry (DU) modified the definition to development which ensures a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come. ... [Pg.970]

On 29 October 2003, the Commission adopted a proposal for a new EU regulatory framework for chemicals, the so-called REACH (Registration, Evaluation, and Authorisation of CHemicals). This new regulatory framework achieved all the objectives identified in the White Paper (EU 2001) and thus represents a model of sustainable development by pursuing its three main goals economic (industrial competitiveness), social (health protection and jobs), and environmental. [Pg.33]

The general opinion about the aforementioned problems and the ad hoc technical solutions is that they are by no means sufficient. The essential concept when thinking about these subjects nowadays is sustainability.
