However, a new era in the development of combustion science started with the foundation of the Combustion Institute in 1954, on the initiative of Bernard Lewis. The institute s influence was further strengthened in 1957 with the release of its journal Combustion and Flame. The creation of the institute brought about two important factors into research activity organization of the combustion commxmity and stimulation of international cooperation.

As an example consider the data presented in Tables 35.1-35.4. These tables are extracted from a much larger data base obtained in an international cooperative study on the sensory aspects of olive oils [1]. Table 35.1 gives the mean scores for 16 samples of olive oil with respect to six appearance attributes given by a Dutch sensory panel. Energy development is international by its very nature. International cooperation in the sphere of energy will ensure faster progress and will make possible the realization of projects which no country could cope with on its own. Large-scale joint efforts between different nations, in particular, between East and West in the field of energy should be initiated. These efforts could include joint research on controlledfusion, and research and development on more inherently safe, as well as more reliable, fission reactors. 

We hope that the Kyoto meeting will call upon all countries to cooperate in deployment of nuclear power as the available means of responsibly meeting the world s energy needs. The issues are of a global extent seeking intelligent international cooperation. 

I have just returned from an International Conference on Geologic Repositories hosted by Secretary Richardson. The joint declaration from this conference committed to continued international cooperation on waste issues and the viability of geologic repositories as one of the preferred options for disposal of nuclear waste. 

While the goal of bringing plutonium production and consumption into balance is a long term one, research and development on proliferation-resistant fuel cycles should be taking place at present. International cooperation ofthe appropriate countries in this R D is also essential. Failure to pursue a suitable R D effort and international cooperation is virtually certain to result in the adoption ofthe most proliferation-prone fuel cycle when the plutonium breeder is deployed in the next century. 

The AIST was created by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) in 1948. Its main activities involve planning industrial S T policies and national R D projects, conducting R D in AIST laboratories, promotion of R D in the private sector, promoting international cooperation and developing national standardization policies. By 1995, AIST had accumulated 10888 patents, from which 1666 were foreign patents. 

I emphasized that we industrialists would desire international cooperation. We [Farben] were against exaggerated self-sufficiency. As at that time we had the world depression, I myself coined the phrase, "We are all in the same boat."... 

Apart from biological research, development of technology and accumulation of social capital are also required for the age of hydrogen energy. International cooperation is also a key factor. These concerted efforts will open the door for the age of renewable hydrogen energy (Fig. 6). 

The Convention provides the basis for the OPCW to monitor the destruction of existing stocks of chemical weapons and the facilities used to produce chemical weapons, as well as by checking many industrial sites to ensure that new chemical weapons are not produced. The OPCW also promotes international cooperation and the exchange of scientific and technical information, so that people and governments can benefit from the peaceful uses of chemistry. 

In circumstances of increasing the threat of international terrorism, and attack with WMD, the regional and international cooperation becomes mandatory. A part of this cooperation is the availability of NBC-OD for affected population. In some cases, like biological attack, the affected area could be larger, pathogens crossing the political or administrative borders.
