In 1998, the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) recognised that business and industry would play a crucial role in the global quest for sustainable development and, on that occasion, UNCSD made reference to the OECD Risk Assessment Programme on brominated flame retardants as a model example of a global, voluntary chemical industry initiative.

Flash chemistry in industry has several advantages from the viewpoint of green sustainable synthesis. In 1987, the United Nations Commission on Environment and Development (the Brundtland Commission) called for a form of sustainable development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. 

In the Priorities for Action of the IFCS in the year 2000, the target year 2008 was set for implementation of a harmonised system, and this was endorsed by the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002. The system adopted in late 2002 was revised in 2005 and 2006 (UNECE 2007). Responsibility rests with the United Nations Economic and Social Council Sub-Committee of Experts on the GHS under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The target of full GHS implementation by 2008 has not been reached, but implementation is well underway. Major actors have set deadlines, such as the United States (transportation 2010) and the European Union (2010 for classification of substances and 2015 for mixtures). 

In 1992 a successor conference, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), was held in Rio de Janeiro. It considered (Hogress since Stockholm in order to chart the way ahead. Its theme was sustainable development and it was held under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The UN Commission f(Mr Sustainable Development emerged from this meeting. Additionally, UNEP was given a strengthened role. 

The appropriate technology branch of the environmental movement remained small and obscure until 1987 when the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development (dubbed the Brundtland Commission for its chairperson, Gro Harlem Brundtland, then the Prime Minister of Norway) published the book-length study, Our Common Future. In essence, the Brundtland report leveled a fundamental critique at the world industrial system it was not sustainable because it was incompatible with nature. A sustainable system is one that survives or persists throughout its full expected life span.

The concept of sustainable development is already old, as developed by the Bmndtland Commission of the United Nations in 1987, in order that economic development is not accompanied by a deterioration in the quality of life. The recommendations of the committee focused on the necessity to limit global warming by controlling emissions of carbon dioxide, to seek alternatives to fossil fuels and to reduce the risks for human health from industrial activities and new products. 

Sustainability has many definitions. One way to think of it is meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs (defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development held by the United Nations in 1983). The concept of sustainability is that we should synchronize our consumption of natural resources with the Earth s production - in other words, using up natural resources at the same rate at which they are produced. Compared to traditional polymers typically made from petroleum and other fossil resources such as natural gas, sustainable polymers are fuUy or partially biobased and/or biodegradable or compostable. They are bioplastics made from renewable resources (biomass) and can be broken down faster than traditional plastics. Sustainable polymers could also protect our Earth by offering a reduced carbon footprint, a reduced use of fossil resources, and improved end-of-life options. 

An initial common reference point presented to this diverse group was the widely cited definition of sustainability developed by the Brundtland Commission—formally known as the World Commission on Environment and Development— which was convened in 1983 by the United Nations General Assembly to examine the interdependence of all sectors of society in achieving sustainable development ... 

This concept is the backbone of the Tokyo Declaration issued by the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development (UN-WCED) 1987. The report of this commission "Our common future" ("Brundtland Report") has developed the guiding principle of a "Sustainable Development", what means a lasting future effect in economy and society paying attention to comprehensive environmental points of view.
