Coast Pilot

Coast Pilot consists of a series of nautical books that cover information important to navigators of coastal and intercoastal waters and the Great Lakes. Issued in nine volumes, these books contain supplemental information that is difficult to portray on a nautical chart. [Pg.84]

The traditional prediction tables that are updated aimually by NOAA provide information about the astronomical tides, currents, river flows, and other meteorological forces. Real-time measurements, enriched by nowcasts, were identified as critical requirements for safe navigation, leading to the creation of the PORTS system. [Pg.85]

PORTS is a public information system that provides real-time information to the general public and provides essential information for safe and cost-effective navigation, search-and-rescue, hazardous material and oil spill prevention and response, and scientific research. PORTS also provides NOAA s Global Ocean Observing System with coastal ocean measurement and dissemination components. All data are continuously archived and are available to the public. PORTS data are broadcast over NOAA Weather Radio hourly by the National Weather Service and are available on a priority basis for trajectory modeling in support of fhe U.S. Coasf Guard. PORTS systems were operational at the following locafions in 2008  [Pg.85]

AtoN are documented and described in databases (ATONIS/USAIMS, ENC) and data products (e.g.. Light List, Notice to Mariners, Coast Pilot). However, these data objects and representations are secondary to their physical manifestation in terms of performance. Indeed, ph5rsical AtoN have existed and stood watch properly for centuries with httle more representation as data objects than a written note on a hand-made chart. [Pg.63]

In August 1948, Kellogg s Engineering Department undertook a design and cost study for a 6,000-barrel-per-day Synthol plant to be erected on the United States Gulf Coast. A memorandum by Johnson provided the design basis and compared this with results obtained from the 4-inch pilot plant (see table). [Pg.13]

In a pilot study of aerosolised red tide, Backer et al. (2003) measrrred the levels of BTX in air and water samples and conducted personal interviews and pulmonary function tests on people before and after visiting Florida beaches during K. brevis red tide proliferation. One hundred twenty-nine people participated in the study, which was conducted during two separate toxic red tide events in the west and east coasts of Florida. Respiratory symptoms, of varying severity depending on duration of exposure, were reported in 47% of participants. [Pg.39]

The plant at Nancekuke on the beautiful Cornish coast manufactured 15 tons of GB, all of which was supposedly used for research there and at Porton. The factory had been designed as a pilot plant , as Sutton Oak had been a pilot plant for the manufacture of mustard gas. In the event, the British, unlike their American allies, never developed a full scale nerve gas manufacturing plant, a decision often represented as one akin to unilateral disarmament. In truth there was no need to expand facilities because the British had proved to their satisfaction that the system worked. In times of crisis it would be necessary only to use the experience of Nancekuke to build a larger plant to produce the nerve gas necessary for future weapons. [Pg.258]

Experience with saline water conversion has shown that testing and evaluating pilot plants on actual sea water at a sea coast site are necessary development steps for promising processes. A Research and Development Test Station for this use is being constructed at Wrightsville Beach, N. C. [Pg.5]

The arguments for this alteration of eleven years in the date of a voyage of discovery are slight indeed. Oviedo, in his History of the Indies wrote that the pilots Pinzon, Solis, and Ledesma discovered the Honduras coast with three vessels, before Pinzon was off the mouth of the Amazon, which was dn 1499 and Gomara has the following passage but some say that Pinzon and Solis had been on the Honduras coast three years before Columbus. These writers were unscrupulous, and... [Pg.40]
