Recovery Process. The Texas Gulf, Cane Creek potash operation (60) of Moab, Utah produces KCl by solution mining (61—64). Brine is pumped from underground to 1.6 x 10 (400 acres) of solar ponds where a mixture of KCl and NaCl is crystallized in a salt mass called sylvinite.

This case study involves an unnamed petrochemical plant located about 15 miles inland from the Texas Gulf Coast, described by Donaldson and Johansen.184 It illustrates two approaches to injecting incompatible wastestreams to prevent well plugging by precipitation surface treatment and multiple injection wells.

The Conroe oil field is 40 miles (64 km) north of Houston on the upper Texas gulf coast. The 30-sq mile (78 km2) field was discovered in 1931 and is developed on 20-acre (81 x 103-m2) spacing with about 1,100 wells. The major producing horizon occurs at an average depth of. 000 ft (1500 m). Total Conroe field maximum efficient rate (MER) is 60,000 B/D (9540 mVd). Before unitization, those leases that joined the unit included 20 active oil wells with an assigned MER allowable of 8,300 B/D (9268 m5/d).

The results of a field test on a thin-bedded potash deposit have been reported by Davis and Shock (D3). Kalium Chemicals, Ltd., in Saskatchewan, Canada (M29), a pioneer in the solution mining of potash since 196.5, have been joined by Texas Gulf Sulphur in their Cane Creek property in Utah (C14).
