Portable fuel-cell systems are systems that produce electricity for devices with a performance ranging from several watts to 10 kilowatts. The heat produced in the process is a by-product that is normally not used. The system has, therefore, to be cooled down by fans or cooling surfaces, etc. A wide range of applications is possible for fuel cells from small electronic devices like camcorders, mobile phones, laptops, etc. to electric tools, back-up systems, or power generation on boats or caravans. [Pg.367]

The LDL receptor also binds to apoE and plays a significant role in the hepatic uptake of chylomicrons and VLDL remnants. However, if LDL receptors are unavailable (as, for example, in a mouse strain that lacks the gene for the LDL receptor), VLDL remnants and chylomicrons are still taken up by the liver even though LDL is not. This indicates the presence of a back-up system for receptor-mediated endocytosis of VLDL remnants and chylomicrons. One back-up receptor is lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRP), which binds to apoE as well as to a number of other ligands. [Pg.825]

On the day of the test, get up early enough to allow yourself extra time to get ready. Set your alarm and have a back-up system in case it doesn t go off. Ask a family member or friend to make sure you are up. Eat a light, healthy breakfast, even if you usually don t eat in the morning. If you normally have coffee, don t overdo it. Too much caffeine can interfere with concentration. [Pg.8]

Some companies elect to back up systems against failure by contracting with a service bureau for emergency recovery. Essentially it is an insurance policy whereby the pharmaceutical or healthcare company leases a standby system. User terminals and printers are installed in the client offices with network connection to the service bureau that may be at the service supplier s premises or a mobile facility that is driven onto site. User applications typically have a target time to restoration within 24 h. The problem with commercial mobile facilities is that their service providers often require up to 48 h to guarantee deployment. [Pg.303]

Suitable security systems should be in place to prevent unauthorized access or changes to computer records and reports. Back-up systems must be in place to prevent loss of data. A good-quality virus protection programme and firewall must be installed, configured, used and updated regularly to prevent unauthorized access and loss of data. [Pg.220]

The nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway is involved in the removal of a wide range of bulky DNA adducts and DNA cross-hnks. In addition, the NER enzymes may recognize many diverse DNA lesions that do not disturb the DNA helix, including 8-oxodG and other modified bases. Under normal conditions NER does not contribute significantly (maybe as httle as 0.1% [39]) to the removal of 8-oxodG in mammahan cell extracts, not even when the pol j8-de-pendent BER pathway was disrupted [33]. It is, however, a common assumption that NER works as a back up system for BER, i.e., when BER is deficient NER can repair the base modifications. [Pg.157]

Microscopic examination of deposits may provide some further evidence of the mechanisms of fouling, but this is generally a "back up" system rather than to give quantitative data. [Pg.499]

A back-up system should be available to respond to system breakdowns or failures that result in permanent loss of critical records. Back-ups may consist of hard copies or other forms (e.g., tapes or microfilm) that ensure back-up data are exact, complete, and secure from alteration, inadvertent erasure, or loss. [Pg.731]

Low-level input sensors such as thermocouples, turbine meters, speed transmitters and a number of process analyzers complicate system selection. Signal conditioning equipment is required for low-level inputs to both the back-up system and computer data acquisition systems. If the system is to be installed as an intrinsically safe system, multiple grounding requirements conforming to intrinsic safety grounding must be referenced to the same safety ground to avoid multiple ground problems. [Pg.341]

Incineration has been determined to be the process that will safely treat all components of the weapons. The destruction facilities were built with back-up systems to prevent environmental release of agent. The U.S. Public Health Service reviews plans and monitors operations of these chemical destruction plants. The appropriate state environmental authorities must issue permits prior to beginning the incineration process. [Pg.411]

Many firms incorporate various redundant systems into their stability program. Back-up systems are not strictly required but can save some headaches in the long term. The following is a description of some of these systems ... [Pg.294]

Another type of back-up power would include redundant compressors and/or steam generators for each individual chamber. This back-up system could be set up to automatically start if the primary system failed. [Pg.294]

Photo-stability chambers may be incorporated into the back-up system used for the temperature and humidity chambers although back-up systems are not necessarily as critical for photo-stability as these types of studies can be fairly easily repeated if necessary. Any back-up system in place should be described and tested during qualification. [Pg.300]

Cooling-water flow control, along with a back-up system, are often necessary to protect sensitive parts from overheating. [Pg.395]

There are often used back-up systems to control complicated and safety important industrial technologies. It is recommended to make measurements of physical parameters based on different physical principles. This can avoid occurrence of common cause failures. [Pg.1504]

How known risks are prevented from actuahsing. This fimction deals with the provision and implementation of barriers (e.g. quahty assurance, back-up systems, checklists and physical barriers) to prevent rmwanted human and technical variance. [Pg.193]

Lead-acid batteries are also used for emergency power in uninterruptible power systems (UPS), telecommunications back-up systems, and safety equipment in critical applications such as hospitals and nuclear power plants. Stationary or standby battery designs and recharge profiles vary according to the specific system requirements. Large battery strings are connected in series to deliver up to several hundred volts. [Pg.119]

The second back-up system provides for the aerodynamic dispersion of a fuel composition with fission products into the upper layers of the Earth atmosphere into particles the sizes of which are sufficiently small to pose no excess radiological hazard to the population and environment. [Pg.2740]
