The installation of fixed systems for down-hole geophysical measurements will permit a more refined monitoring of the environmental state of the sub-surface and the development of automatic alarm systems to ensure swift response in the event of critical changes in the quality of the sub-surface. The overall reduction of investigation time has led to the installation of a containment system about one year earlier than would have been possible, had a classical approach been employed. 

Let us now look at several results of this investigation. In the nuclear war scenario, for example, the SSMAE shows that Arctic environmental stability would be disturbed 3 months after the impact. From other scenarios, it follows that variations in the velocity of vertical advection from 0.004cm/s to 0.05 cm/s does not affect the Arctic environmental state. An error of 32% in ice area estimate leads to a variation in simulation results of 36%. When this error is more than 32%, simulation results become less stable and can vary by several times. The problem exists of finding the proper criterion to estimate SSMAE sensitivity to variations in model parameters. As Krapivin (1996) showed, a survivability function J(t) reflecting the dynamics of the total biomass of living elements would enable this sensitivity to be estimated. In this instance...

The positive effect of the interaction between these factors was enhanced owing to the shallow-water character of the sea and its geographical position. Since the middle of the last century the environmental state of the Sea of Azov has been under great anthropogenic pressure, resulting in negative changes in the sea biota. 

In spite of published results of the extensive studies of the considered river mouths, a systematic overview of these investigations and analysis of present-day environmental state of these objects did not perform up to now. An attempt to draw up such overview will be made in this chapter. 

In the following sections the experience with the applied environmental monitoring and the analytical techniques used will be described in more detail. Also the impact of man s activities on the environmental state of the atmosphere around the Italian station will be discussed. 

The data obtained on heavy metal concentrations in the air at TNB provided information on natural and/or anthropogenic events. The combination of three analytical techniques (INAA, ETA-AAS and HPLC) has proved important in the evaluation of the environmental state of the atmosphere where concentrations are so low. Finally, the elaboration and the analysis of the monitoring data continues therefore, more definitive conclusions may be available at a later stage. The Madrid Protocol also requires the preparation of emergency plans and this contributes to the safety of stations. From the Italian experience it can be said that the Madrid Protocol is a major contribution to the protection of Antarctic environment, to the efficient management of research stations and to the safety of Antarctic personnel. 

In terms of the simple model of adsorbed water (8), environmental state B (bulk-like water) is first removed from the pore during dehydration leaving behind the two bound states Ai and 2 (or the combined state A). The environmental state of an X-ray absorbing atom in a protein, as in most materials , is considerably removed from that of a free atom. As a result, considerable structure exists in linear absorption coefficients very close to the absorption edge (see Appendix 4, figure A4.1). 

In order to provide a fair basis for examining human impacts, future environmental states in the absence of action must be estimated. The populations of a species of animal or fish may already be declining (which can be schematically represented in Fig. 1), due to over-grazing or over-fishing, even before a smelter is built. This part of the analysis is largely a scientific problem, requiring skills drawn from many disciplines. The prediction will often be uncertain, but the degree of uncertainty should be indicated in qualitative terms at least. 

In some regions, the assessor may be able to find cartographic charts of future environmental states, which have been prepared recently for some other purpose. The with-action and without-action conditions can then be readily compared.
