However, the environmental objective might best be addressed by seeking to change behavior through an advisory standard (e.g., one that acts as an information... [Pg.8]

Regulatory and Advisory Standards. In some cases, rather than performing a detailed risk assessment for a specific situation, a user may wish to rely upon the risk assessments that underlie various published regulatory and advisory standards. In other cases (such as at Superfund sites), the user would want to know the relationship between observed concentrations and regulatory/advisory standards even if she or he intended to perform an independent risk assessment. Risk Assistant contains databases of standards and advisory values developed by the Federal government, State governments, and other bodies, such as ... [Pg.190]

The Australian Environment Protection (Ambient Air Quality) Measure was amended in 2003 to include particles as PM2.5, in the form of advisory reporting standards (NEPC 2003). The present annual and 24-h mean ambient PM2.5 reporting advisory standards are 8 and 25 pg m , respectively. This annual reporting standard is in fact more stringent than the corresponding WHO guideline value. [Pg.604]

Placed coal mines, metal, and nonmetal mines under a single law, with enforcement provisions similar to the 1969 act. Separate safety and health standards were retained Moved enforcement agency to Department of Labor, renamed it MSHA Required fom annual inspections at aU tmderground mines, two at aU surface mines Eliminated advisory standards for metal and nonmetal mines Discontinued state enforcement plans in metal and nonmetal sectors Provided for mandatory miner training Required mine rescue teams for aU tmderground mines... [Pg.5]

In the late 1980s attempts were made in California to shift fuel use to methanol in order to capture the air quaHty benefits of the reduced photochemical reactivity of the emissions from methanol-fueled vehicles. Proposed legislation would mandate that some fraction of the sales of each vehicle manufacturer be capable of using methanol, and that fuel suppHers ensure that methanol was used in these vehicles. The legislation became a study of the California Advisory Board on Air QuaHty and Fuels. The report of the study recommended a broader approach to fuel quaHty and fuel choice that would define environmental objectives and allow the marketplace to determine which vehicle and fuel technologies were adequate to meet environmental objectives at lowest cost and maximum value to consumers. The report directed the California ARB to develop a regulatory approach that would preserve environmental objectives by using emissions standards that reflected the best potential of the cleanest fuels. [Pg.434]

The USDA considers most spices generaHy recognized as safe (GRAS). There are no standards of identity or legal definitions of spices. Spices used in dmgs must meet the official standards of the US. Pharmacoepla in force. Advisory specifications may also be appHed in commercial spice trading. [Pg.27]

Discuss the relative roles of the staff of an air pollution control agency, its advisory board, and its chief executives in the development and promulgation of air quality and emission standards. [Pg.443]

Regulatory and advisory bodies publish methods for ambient air analysis sueh as those issued by the British Standards Institute and the US Environment Proteetion Ageney (Tables 10.24 and 10.25, respeetively). Methods for assessment of workplace air are published by the Health and Safety Exeeutive. Some of these are generie methods (Table 10.26) whilst others are eompound speeifie (Table 10.27). Examples of other offieial methods for monitoring workplaee air quality are those published by the British Standards Institute (Table 10.28), and the US National Institute of Oeeupational Safety and Health (Table 10.29). Table 10.30 provides additional guidanee on analytieal teehniques for a seleetion of substanees. [Pg.357]

Institutional needs for each alternative must be developed as part of the technology evaluation. Specifically, this should address the effects of federal, state and local environmental and public health standards, regulations, guidance, advisories, ordinance or community relations on the design, operation and timing of each alternative. [Pg.140]

A health advisory is not a legally enforceable federal standard, but serves as technical guidance to assist federal, state, and local officials. [Pg.242]

Regulatory and advisory bodies publish methods for ambient air analysis such as those from HSE, the British Standards Institution and NIOSH listed in Table 9.12. Table 9.13 provides additional data on analytical techniques for a selection of substances. [Pg.237]

Advisory Group are considering different facets of LCA. In 1993, they developed the Code of Practice ,the first worldwide accepted technical framework for LCA. This was an important step towards the harmonisation of the method and has initiated and supported the standardisation process by ISO. Between 1997 and 2000, ISO produced the international series of standard defining the different stages of the LCA methodology (ISO 14040 1997, ISO 14041 1998, ISO 14042 2000 ° as well as ISO 14043 2000° ). As mentioned above, these standards were replaced by two improved editions of life cycle assessment standards in 2006 (ISO 14040 2006 and ISO 14044 2006°). [Pg.252]

Regular soil analysis is also important for checking the levels of the important nutrients - phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Care should be taken to confirm the method of analysis, because the Scottish system and that carried out by organic laboratories and by Agricultural Development and Advisory Service (ADAS) laboratories have different standards. For instance, on the Scottish system, very low for potassium (the lowest level) is less than 40, whereas the... [Pg.21]
