Community relations

One of the six elements of Responsible Care is the Codes of Management Practice, and one of the codes is the Process Safety Code of Management Practices (34). This code emphasi2es management commitment and accountabiUty, information sharing, and community relations, but also includes 11 of the 14 specific elements of the legislated process safety management standards developed later. 

Institutional needs for each alternative must be developed as part of the technology evaluation. Specifically, this should address the effects of federal, state and local environmental and public health standards, regulations, guidance, advisories, ordinance or community relations on the design, operation and timing of each alternative.

Conducting community interviews. Community interviews are carried out to obtain information that can be used to develop a site-specific community relations plan that documents the objectives and approaches of the community relations program. 

Deliverables required for all RI/FSs in which field investigations are planned consist of a work plan, an SAP, a health and safety plan (HSP), and a community relations plan (CRP). 

Community relations should be properly maintained throughout the RI, including site characterization.

In a prospective study on the prevalence of hearing impairment in a neonatal intensive care unit population (a total of 942 neonates were screened), aminoglycoside administration did not seem to be an important risk factor for communication-related hearing impairment (148). In almost all cases, another factor was the more probable cause of the hearing loss (dysmorphism, prenatal rubella or cytomegaly, a positive family history of hearing loss, and severe perinatal and postnatal complications). 

When one adds to this list of 108 substances the 21 substances which were chosen earlier and which have already been studied (see Table 1, page 4) one obtains the complete list of 129 substances to which this communication relates. 

Development and maintenance of open communication and cooperation with national and international government bodies, concerned members of the medical and scientific community, related industries (e.g., cosmetics), and other stakeholders. 

The main objectives of Responsible Care were to regain public trust and demonstrate leadership beyond compliance by improving the environmental performance of the industry as a whole and by improving community relations. 

Evaluating the program s impact on public trust is more complicated. Although Responsible Care may have helped arrest the precipitous decline in trust that marked the early to mid-1980s, industry polls continue to reveal low overall levels of public confidence in the industry. To address the concerns of its diverse stakeholders, the chemical industry has formed hundreds of community advisory councils and partnerships with community and environmental activists in an attempt to hear their points of view (see Section 6.7). While individual companies report improved community relations and while the industry is much more open than it has ever been, polls indicate that it remains low in the public s esteem (Moffet, 1999). 

Social responsibility is used here as a general term to encompass the community relations information that appears under different labels on the companies websites (corporate citizenship, charitable work, community service, etc.).
