Action level

Sources of human exposure to formaldehyde are engine exhaust, tobacco smoke, natural gas, fossil fuels, waste incineration, and oil refineries (129). It is found as a natural component in fmits, vegetables, meats, and fish and is a normal body metaboHte (130,131). FaciUties that manufacture or consume formaldehyde must control workers exposure in accordance with the following workplace exposure limits in ppm action level, 0.5 TWA, 0.75 STEL, 2 (132). In other environments such as residences, offices, and schools, levels may reach 0.1 ppm HCHO due to use of particle board and urea—formaldehyde foam insulation in constmction.

Effective Dec. 10, 1987, the existing standard for benzene was amended under OSHA (29 CER, Part 1910.1028). The revised standard reduced the permissible exposure limit from 10 ppm (32 mg/m ) to 1 ppm (3.2 mg/m ) iu an 8-h TWA. The short term exposure limit (STEL) of 5 ppm was set over a 15 min period. The standard also established action level requirements for exposure over 0.5 ppm.

Lead and copper are regulated by a Treatment Technique that requires systems to control the corrosiveness of their water. If more than 10% of tap water samples exceed the action level, water systems must take additional steps. For copper, the action level is 1.3 mg/L, and for lead is 0.015 mg/L.

We believe that the explanation of results is very important. Getting results that are below the detection limit or far below any PELs or action levels will sometimes go unreported or be given very little attention. We believe that any number, even zero, is well worth discussing with anyone voicing a health concern. Posting numbers and not discussing results that are below PELs may be a compliant practice, but we believe that getting to a personal level is a much better practice [2].

No matter what type of respirator is used, it is of the utmost importance that the revised respiratory standard is adhered to. The conventional control chart is a graph having a time axis (abscissa) consisting of a simple raster, such as that provided by graph or ruled stationary paper, and a measurement axis (ordinate) scaled to provide six to eight standard deviations centered on the process mean.
