Guards are physical barriers which prevent access to the danger zone. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) require employers to take effective measures to prevent access to dangerous parts of machinery. These regulations also apply to contact with a rotating bar which projects beyond the headstock of a lathe. [Pg.138]

The primary objective of the Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 PUWER is to ensure that no work equipment, including power presses, gives rise to risks to health and safety regardless of the work equipments, age, condition and origin. [Pg.280]

Although power presses are included as work equipment, part IV of PUWER contains specific requirements for power presses and is dealt with in Chapter 17. In addition to the requirements of PUWER, lifting equipment is also subject to the requirements of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 and is dealt with in Chapter 20. [Pg.7]

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) require, amongst other things, that all machinery is suitable for its intended use and is properly maintained, and that employees, including those using, mounting and managing the operation of abrasive wheels, are fully informed and properly trained in their use. [Pg.149]

PUWER requires that where safety is dependent on the installation conditions and/or the work equipment is exposed to conditions causing deterioration, which may result in a significant risk and a dangerous situation developing, that the equipment is inspected by a competent person. In this case the competent person would normally be an employee, but there may be circumstances like specialized earth moving equipment, where an outside competent person would be used. [Pg.192]

PUWER has specific requirements for risk assessment which are covered under the Health and Safety Management Regulations. [Pg.457]

The main purpose of this section is to require additional precautions relating to work equipment while it is travelling from one location to another or where it does work while moving. If the equipment is designed primarily for travel on public roads the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 will normally be sufficient to comply with PUWER 98. [Pg.460]
