The foregoing paragraphs refer particularly to stray d.c. from railways, tramways, trolley vehicles, mobile cranes and similar systems where the running rails or metallic supports are in direct contact with the earth. Underground d.c. tube railways usually operate on the fourth rail system and may be enclosed within cast-iron tube linings so that there is little or no stray current. 

In recent years there has been a tendency to use a.c. in preference to d.c. for industrial purposes, but d.c. systems may still be operating in shipyards, steelworks and similar sites for motive power and also for mobile cranes, lighting and control equipment. The running rails and mountings of such systems are usually in close contact with the earth and severe leakages can be expected to occur, either accidently or eis a result of deterioration with age.

Stability - there are many types of work equipment that might fall over, collapse or overturn unless they are fixed. Most machines used in a fixed position should be bolted down. Some types or work equipment such as mobile cranes may need counterbalance weights. Ladders should be at the correct angle (a slope of four units up to each one out from the base), correct height (at least 1 metre above the landing place) and tied at the top or secured at the foot.
