Lacquer or shellac was sometimes layered to produce a material that could be carved or molded. Popular examples of this process are the red Asian cinnabar ware and union cases used for early photographs. Most cinnabar-ware actually contains no cinnabar, although this toxic sulfide of mercury was originally used as a coloring agent. Some of this lacquer-ware is composed entirely of many layers of lacquer, but most has a base of wood or metal. [Pg.88]

Shellac is dark in colour, and is usually dyed black, red or brown. Its best known uses were as gramophone records. Another use was for American Union cases, which were small boxes used as folding picture frames (Fig. 13.1). They could be closed to preserve the silver nitrate coated glass photo des called Daguerreotypes, which deteriorate in the h t. Shellac was also used fin dressing table sets and for brooches. It is a britde material and can crack or chip. Shellac is compression moulded, and is still produced today. [Pg.241]

Certain types of equipment are specifically excluded from the scope of the directive. It is self-evident that equipment which is already regulated at Union level with respect to the pressure risk by other directives had to be excluded. That is the case with simple pressure vessels, transportable pressure equipment, aerosols and motor vehicles. Other equipment, such as carbonated drink containers or radiators and piping for hot water systems are excluded from the scope because of the limited risk involved. The measuren.cnts are performed on a sample made from Inconell IN 718 placed at our disposal by Me oren- und Turbinen-Union Miinchen GmbH (MTU). The sample is of disk shape and has a curved side and a flat side, see also fig. 6. On the curved side MTU had detected a segregation reaching to the surface but with unknown depth. It had been detected by segregation etching and its existence was confirmed by eddy current testing. Nucleophilic Substitution Route. Commercial synthesis of poly(arylethersulfone)s is accompHshed almost exclusively via the nucleophilic substitution polycondensation route. This synthesis route, discovered at Union Carbide in the early 1960s (3,4), involves reaction of the bisphenol of choice with 4,4 -dichlorodiphenylsulfone in a dipolar aprotic solvent in the presence of an alkaUbase. Examples of dipolar aprotic solvents include A/-methyl-2-pyrrohdinone (NMP), dimethyl acetamide (DMAc), sulfolane, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Examples of suitable bases are sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, and potassium carbonate. In the case of polysulfone (PSE) synthesis, the reaction is a two-step process in which the dialkah metal salt of bisphenol A (1) is first formed in situ from bisphenol A [80-05-7] by reaction with the base (eg, two molar equivalents of NaOH),... [Pg.460]

Brass water fittings give no trouble except that dezincification may occur in acid waters or waters of high chloride content, especially when hot. This dezincification has three effects. Firstly, the replacement of brass by porous copper may extend right through the wall of the fitting and permit water to seep through. Secondly, the zinc which is dissolved out of the brass may form very voluminous hard corrosion products and eventually block the waterway —this is often the case in hot soft waters. Thirdly, and often the most important, the mechanical properties of the brass may deteriorate. For instance, a dezincified screwed union will break off when an attempt is made to unscrew it and a dezincified tap or ball-valve seat is readily eroded by the water. [Pg.60]

A difficulty arises in describing the precise chemical nature of many inhibitor formulations that are actually used in practice. With the advancing technology of inhibitor applications there are an increasing number of formulations that are marketed under trade names. The compositions of these are, for various reasons, frequently not disclosed. A similar problem arises in describing the composition of many inhibitor formulations used in the former Soviet Union.
