Table setting

Cocktail Conceptions, which is actually Mr. Zaric and Mr. Kosmas s dining room table, set up with liquors, barware and glassware, jars of sugars and vanilla beans, homemade infusions and bowls of fruits currently in the markets in Astoria, has worked for Courvoisier, Beefeater, Mumm and Perrier Jouet Champagne, and the new Stoli Premier. 

BS 2486 was first published in 1954, revised in 1978, and revised again in 1997. The 1978 revision contained two primary tables setting out water chemistry guidelines these were both quite broad in nature and covered FT (shell) boilers and WT boilers. This revision has now been withdrawn by BSI and replaced by the 1997 revision. The latest revision brings the technical content up to date, reflecting considerable additional experience gained in boiler design and operation by the subcommittee and 14 other bodies that provided contributions.

Shellac was a substance excreted by insects. It was mixed with wood flour, moulded and dyed - usually black or brown. It was lifter Than bois duici and gave good detail in moulding. It was used to make picture flames (F. 13.1), dressing table sets, some jewellery and, notably, 78 tpm gramophone records. Examined under a microscope it is possible to see the wood content. Black shellac gives a black streak. 

Later ivory became much more readily available to the general public, and by the start of the twentieth century was immensely popular in Europe. It was used for such items as dressing table sets, writing sets, card cases, games and knife handles - all useful objects but with ivory giving them the added touch of luxury.

Tortoiseshell can also be used as a back ground for inlay. The elastic quality of tortoise ell gives it the ability to hold small pieces of gold or silver when these are pressed into the material as it is heated. It is not necessary to hollow out sections for inlay, or to glue them in place, as the material contraas on coolii. This is called piqa6 work, and is very often seen in dressing table sets or tortoiseshell jewellery Cf igs 8.6 and 8.11). 

Blond tortoiseshell can be difficult to identify. It lacks the striations of horn, but looks very like clear, dark honey-coloured plastic. It is usually made into fine pieces such as boxes or dressing table sets, often with gold or silver pique work. Plastic would not be used in this way. Seen through a lOx lens by transmitted light, blond tortoiseshell looks less clear than plastic. 

The quality of the workmanship may indicate the type of material used. Tortoiseshell is unlikely to be wasted on very coarse work. The item for which the material has been used is also an indication of whether it is horn or tortoiseshell. Horn was seldom if ever used for dressing table sets, picture frames, card cases, and so forth. These were all traditionally made from tortoiseshell. 

Thou still rare and expensive, tortoiseshell was a vourite material in Europe by the twentieth century. It was made into dressing table sets, mounted in silver and inlaid with piqu6 work. Card cases were sometimes made of the pressed material, and sometimes finely carved. Cane and umbrella handles, small boxes, spectacle frames and cases, frns, opera sses, and many other similar objects could be made from, or adorned with, this attractive material. 

Shellac is dark in colour, and is usually dyed black, red or brown. Its best known uses were as gramophone records. Another use was for American Union cases, which were small boxes used as folding picture frames (Fig. 13.1). They could be closed to preserve the silver nitrate coated glass photo des called Daguerreotypes, which deteriorate in the h t. Shellac was also used fin dressing table sets and for brooches. It is a britde material and can crack or chip. Shellac is compression moulded, and is still produced today.

Elements are arranged in the periodic table set up by Mendeleev in 1875 according to their atomic number, forming the most important method for grouping related elements.
