Now go to the butt end of the log. The butt often has irregularities such as flare, which may need to be removed to accommodate the mill. Mark out the flare, then draw horizontal and vertical index lines. With a level, draw straight lines across the area to be removed (3). Mark out cant lines as you did on the top end of the log (4), then remove the flare with either crosscutting or ripping chain (5).

Economic Aspects. The stmctural plywood industry now has (ca 1997) about 105 operating mills, representing a significant decrease over the past several years. Production in 1994 was about 17.4 x 10 m (2), also representing a marked decrease over previous years. This decrease is a result of several factors, two of the most important being a decrease in availabiHty of suitable veneer logs, especially in the western states, and competition from the newer oriented strand board stmctural panel industries. 

The ore is ordinarily ground to pass through a ca 1.2-mm (14-mesh) screen, mixed with 8—10 wt % NaCl and other reactants that may be needed, and roasted under oxidising conditions in a multiple-hearth furnace or rotary kiln at 800—850°C for 1—2 h. Temperature control is critical because conversion of vanadium to vanadates slows markedly at ca 800°C, and the formation of Hquid phases at ca 850°C interferes with access of air to the mineral particles. During roasting, a reaction of sodium chloride with hydrous siUcates, which often are present in the ore feed, yields HCl gas. This is scmbbed from the roaster off-gas and neutralized for pollution control, or used in acid-leaching processes at the mill site. 

The oxide exiting either the Barton or ball mill reactor is conveyed by an air stream to separating equipment, ie, settling tank, cyclone, and baghouse, after which it is stored in large hoppers or dmmmed for use in paste mixing. Purity of the lead feed stock is extremely critical because minute quantities of some impurities can either accelerate or slow the oxidation reaction markedly. Detailed discussions of the oxide-making process and product are contained in references 55—57. 

The methods outlined are, in general, preferred among the methods in use for identifying commercial milled graphites by color of ash, grit, color of mark, and feel. 

In wet ball milling the grinding rate increases with sohds content up to 70 wt % (35 vol%), as Fig. 20-33 shows, due to pulp rheology. Examination of gouge marks indicated that most breakage was by impact of balls on particles rather than by abrasion.

An increase in milling clay has a marked effect on improving this property. 

In order to test this concept a series of compounds was prepared in a 5 L Shaw Intermix (rubber internal mixer, Mark IV, Kl) with EPDM (Keltan 720 ex-DSM elastomers an amorphous EPDM containing 4.5 wt% of dicyclopentadiene and having a Mooney viscosity ML(1 +4) 125°C of 64 MU 100 phr), N550 carbon black (50 phr), diisododecyl phthalate (10 phr), stearic acid (2 phr), and l,3-bis(tert-butylperoxy-isopropyl)benzene (Perkadox 14/40 MB ex Akzo Nobel 40% active material 6 or 10 phr). Simple mixtures of this type have little resistance to water and are suitable for use only under the driest conditions. Many methods have been used for giving water resistance to these explosives, particularly to the milled varieties which tend to be less satisfactory in this respect than the hot mixed compositions. A small proportion of wax may be used, particularly if mixed in hot, but this tends to desensitise the explosive. Greater success is achieved by the addition of calcium soaps such as calcium stearate, in finely divided form. These also cause some desensitisation, but to an extent which is less marked in proportion to the degree of waterproofness achieved.
