Housewares is another large segment of the use of polystyrenes. Refrigerator door liners and furniture panels are typical thermo formed impact polystyrene applications. Extruded profiles of solid or foamed impact polystyrene are used for mirror or picture frames, and moldings for construction applications.

Resin compositions were also used to make molded decorative and household objects. These compounds were used for the covers of books, picture frames, buttons, and lots of other small objects. Most of these items were black, but sometimes they were made white, as an imitation of ivory. These items are britde and flammable and were the precursors to modern plastics. 

Casting. The reactive liquid mixture is poured into a mold, and allowed to polymerize and cure. This is used to make solid tires for industrial vehicles, and to make decorative items such as simulated wood trim, furniture, picture frames, and lamp bases.

The quality of the workmanship may indicate the type of material used. Tortoiseshell is unlikely to be wasted on very coarse work. The item for which the material has been used is also an indication of whether it is horn or tortoiseshell. Horn was seldom if ever used for dressing table sets, picture frames, card cases, and so forth. These were all traditionally made from tortoiseshell. 

Shellac is dark in colour, and is usually dyed black, red or brown. Its best known uses were as gramophone records. Another use was for American Union cases, which were small boxes used as folding picture frames (Fig. 13.1). They could be closed to preserve the silver nitrate coated glass photo des called Daguerreotypes, which deteriorate in the h t. Shellac was also used fin dressing table sets and for brooches. It is a britde material and can crack or chip. Shellac is compression moulded, and is still produced today. 

Molding. This method is used for producing molded-foam products such as pipe coverings, window frames, chair shells, and picture frames.
