Unions representatives

Logically, a representative carries the wishes of the people they represent to a place where decisions are taken that affect them - this is the case for Members of Parliament, Union Representatives, Committee Members, etc. The note would appear to address the need for representation outside the business. Inside the business, the representative represents management to the workforce but not in the same sense. The person carries the wishes of management (i.e. the policies) to the workforce so that the workforce makes decisions that take into account the wishes of management. 

If you present to unionized faciiities, consider briefing union representatives in advance to gain a sense of any questions or issues they might raise and address them as thoroughly as you can. Also, it is important that they attend the presentation. 

This is an organization of doctors and nurses based in area offices and form the medical arm of the HSE. The EMAS provides advice, at the request of the employer, employee, self-employed, trade union representative or medical practitioner, on the effects of work on health. 

Other participants can be involved in a full time or in a limited consulting role depending on the nature of the incident, ft is important to include people who know what actually happens in the field—not just what is supposed to happen. The team selection should be able to withstand third party scrutiny such as that of employees, departments, union representatives, community groups, and legal. This at-will relationship can be modified in two different ways. One is by statute, which will be discussed in detail later, and the other is by private contract between the hospital and the nurse. Although it is probably a rare practice in the field, hospitals and nurses can sign employment contracts that spell out the duties and responsibilities of the two parties, and which modify the typical at-will relationship. No doubt more common are contracts negotiated between unions representing the nurses and the hospital itself. Such contracts often spell out the terms and conditions of the job, including hours of work, limits on required overtime work, and disciplinary procedures to be followed if an employee fails to comply with the conditions in the contract.

The OSHA encourages employers and employees to woik together to reduce hazards. Employees should discuss safety and health problems with the employer, other workers, and union representatives (if there is a union). Information on OSHA requirements can be obtained from the OSHA area office. If there is a state occupational safety and health program, similar information can be obtained from the state.

The pilot project report, which was published in April 2001, included (1) a survey of various indicators of the development of the risk level, (2) interviews with some of the key actors in the industry, and (3) proposals for further work (Norwegian Petroleum Directorate 2001). These proposals included a questionnaire to be distributed to all employees working on offshore installations. By including interviews and questionnaires, the RNNP project legitimised the opinions of offshore workers and union representatives as valid and necessary input to an assessment of safety in the petroleum sector.
