Most CVM computer codes are not necessarily optimized to work seamlessly with earthquake simulation codes. Modelers use additional tools to convert the data retrieved from a given CVM into grids or meshes. One particular tool of the sort is the unified community velocity model (UCVM) software framework (Small et al. 2015). UCVM is a collection of software tools developed and maintained by the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) to provide an efficient and standard access to multiple, alternative velocity models. Although UCVM was primarily bruit to manage the SCEC community velocity models CVM-S and CVM-H for Southern California (Fig. 7), it supports and can be used to register other models as well.

Abstract To better understand the relation between form and function in the complex olfactory communication system of the ringtailed lemur (Lemur catta), we integrated observational, experimental, and chemical approaches applied to a population of semi free-ranging animals at the Duke Lemur Center in Durham, North Carolina. Our aim was to examine sex-role reversal in the expression and function of scent marking and unravel the contribution of multimodal components of information transfer, with the unifying framework for all three avenues of our research being that multiplicity of form implies multiplicity of function. 

Strength Internal Fire Department communications were successful. Nextel was used as backup communication for privacy of command staff conversations. Primary fire department communications occurred via E-Tower which was restricted to GVW Fire Department use. Dispatcher initiated all-call page for other county fire departments to be on standby. State of South Carolina provided additional communications capabilities through 800 MHz radio. Faxes, phones, etc. available on Haz-Mat units was a key factor in good communications. Twice a day briefings with written objectives were conducted at UCP (Unified CP) status of previously established objectives were updated at each briefing. 

Improvement Item Better communication between response personnel would have resulted in pertinent information sharing. Unified CP was in place when EPA arrived. Clear lines of authority had not been established, but the right things were occurring, although maybe not as smoothly as they could have.

A common language unifies a community of practitioners, at the same time that it sets them apart from other communities. As the chemist Mayer wrote Lewis about Slater s lecture at the Baltimore meeting of the American Physical Society, the talk of tetrahedral axes and coupling sounded so familiar that "I felt much at home " 15 In this regard, the invention of the phrase "resonance hybrid" should be remarked as a stroke of genius. No term could better have expressed the union of the natural philosophy tradition ("resonance") and the natural history tradition ("hybrid") in the theory of the electronic constitution of benzene. Both physicists and chemists felt at home.

Data systems that participate in a federation can be very heterogeneous both in their content and implementation. In a federated system, it is a great advantage to define communication in terms of external abstraction rather than in terms of internal computer representation. This is not so true for unified systems, where the imposition of a specific data model among components makes it more reasonable to define communication in terms of computer-oriented characteristics and assumptions. 

General standards for drugs are typically published in the so-called national pharmacopoeia. The names of the different national pharmacopoeia are formed by pharmacop(o)eia combined with the name of the country, for example, the United States Pharmacopeia and National Formulary (USP-NF). Attempts to generalize and unify the different national pharmacopoeia have continued for over a century. The European Community signed a convention that resulted in issuance of the European Pharmacopoeia [11 ]. Finally, the WHO (United Nations World Health Organization) publishes a Pharmacopoeia Internationalis [12].

EU (European Union) A consolidation of European countries (member states) functioning as one body to facilitate trade. Previously known as the European Community (EC), the EU expanded to include much of Eastern Europe in 2004, raising the total number of member states to 25. In 2002, the EU launched a unified currency, the Euro. See europa.eu.int. 

Standards (e.g., IEC 61508), methods of risk and hazard analysis, and certification methods have evolved long before IT. Security has evolved quite recently with networked IT-systems and concerns about privacy, data integrity, authenticity and protection. Both communities have developed their own standards, methods and system views—and neither in standardization nor in application areas they cooperate well. The paper takes a holistic view of critical systems and proposes a unified approach to system dependability, integrating both safety and security, arguing that in case of massively deployed embedded systems security issues have severe safety impact and vice versa. 

It has been demonstrated, that mass deployment of networked, dependable embedded systems with critical control functions require a new, holistic system view on safety critical and security critical systems. Both communities have to interact, communicate and integrate at the end. A unified approach to address the safety AND security requirements of safety related systems is proposed, based on the functional safety standard IEC 61508 and IT-Security management standards, handbooks and guidelines.
