Fuel cell operation entails (1) coupled proton migration and water fluxes in the PEM, (2) circulation and electrochemical conversion of electrons, protons, reactant gases, and water in CLs, and (3) gaseous diffusion and water exchange via vaporization/condensation in pores and channels of CLs, GDLs, and EEs. All components of an operating cell have to cooperate well in order to optimize the highly nonlinear interplay of these processes. Standards (e.g., IEC 61508), methods of risk and hazard analysis, and certification methods have evolved long before IT. Security has evolved quite recently with networked IT-systems and concerns about privacy, data integrity, authenticity and protection. Both communities have developed their own standards, methods and system views—and neither in standardization nor in application areas they cooperate well. Vegetable and seed oils as well as some synthetic base stocks present a new class of biodegradable base stocks. These fluids (10) have excellent biodegradation properties as measured by criteria developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). OECD 301 and EPA 560/6-82-003 measure the biodegradation of lubricants. These tests were developed to measure the degradation of oil, especially two-cycle ok, on waterways.
