According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, a), the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases of foodborne infections in the U.S. in 2002 was 16,580, including (rates per 100,000 people) salmonellosis (16.1), campylobacteriosis (13.3), and shigellosis (10.3). Escherichia coli 0157, Listeria, Vibrio, Yersinia, Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, and hemolytic-uremic E. coli were also found to be the causes of infections. The morbidity rate reached about 46 cases per 100,000 people.

The Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), a national study conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that 40% of Americans had used a dietary supplement in the month before they were interviewed for the study. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) report that cardiovascular-renal drugs (including diuretics, beta blockers, and calcium channel blockers) were the most frequently prescribed medications in the United States in 1999 (the most recent year for which data was available). In fact, the loop diuretic Lasix was the second most frequently prescribed medication overall, with more than 12.9 million prescriptions written. It was second only to the allergy drug Claritin.

The U.S. Center for Disease Control conducted a door-to-door survey of some 300 homes asking about effects and examined physicians records. The survey "did not produce any evidence of toxic illness or severe health effects." However, it is essential that the triage nurse be prepared to utilize an infectious disease triage model algorithm when triaging during an infectious disease disaster. Should such a situation occur, the algorithm to be used will likely be issued by the state or territorial department of health in concert with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

However, in recent years, various toys and other products imported from other countries have been found to contain lead paint. This situation has prompted a number of recalls. ADHD is a worldwide disorder. Estimates for ADHD prevalence worldwide vary from 1.5% to almost 20%J1-6 The prevalence of ADHD in the United States is estimated by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to be 7.74% of all school age children (about 4.4 million children). A recently published study (2007) determined that almost 9% of all U.S. children suffer from ADHDJ8 It is not known why the range of prevalences reported vary as much as they do. They may be because of actual differences or variations in diagnosis and data collection.
