When the adsorption capacity of a carbon unit is exceeded, there is breakthrough of the contaminant in the treated stream. Eixed beds may be operated in series to allow continuous treatment while spent or exhausted units are replaced with fresh carbon. In series operation, there are two or more units. The majority of the contaminant is removed by the first unit in the series with the downstream units acting as polishing units. When breakthrough occurs in the first or primary unit, it is replaced with fresh carbon and becomes a polishing unit while the next unit in the series takes over and becomes the primary treatment unit. An example of this round-robin operation of a three-carbon bed is shown in Eigure 2. [Pg.160]

The treatment units used for color removal are the same as those used for turbidity removal. However, the pH must be increased prior to filtration so that the metal hydroxides are removed by the filters. At low pH values, metal ions or their soluble complexes readily pass through the filters and form insoluble species in storage tanks and in the distribution system. Figure 14.1 presents the main components of a typical in situ SVE system.910 Vertical extraction wells are installed inside the contaminated zone at appropriate distances from one another. The SVE wells are typically constructed of PVC pipe, with a screened interval, which is placed within the contaminated zone. The wells are connected to blowers or vacuum pumps, which induce a continuous airflow through the pores of the unsaturated zone. The soil surface is sometimes covered with an impermeable seal, made from high density polyethylene (HDPE) or bentonite clay for example, to prevent the vertical influx of air from the surface, which might cause short-circuiting problems, and promote horizontal gas flow through the contaminated area. The airstream, which contains the contaminant vapors, passes initially through an air-water separation unit to remove the entrained moisture and is then directed to the gas treatment unit, where the contaminants are thermally destroyed or removed by adsorption. [Pg.523]

Pilot testing is intended to simulate the physical, biological, and chemical parameters of a full-scale process therefore, the treatment unit size and the volume of waste to be processed in pilot systems greatly increase over those of bench-scale testing.
