Impermeable seals

If bentonite pellets or chips are to be used instead of grout, the bentonite pellets can be placed in shallow wells (within 15.0 m of ground surface) by pouring them through the annular space from above in much the same manner as the filter pack is placed. If this installation procedure is chosen, sufficient potable water must be added in conjunction with the bentonite to hydrate the individual pieces. Hydration causes the pieces to swell and form a highly impermeable seal. [Pg.798]

Figure 14.1 presents the main components of a typical in situ SVE system.910 Vertical extraction wells are installed inside the contaminated zone at appropriate distances from one another. The SVE wells are typically constructed of PVC pipe, with a screened interval, which is placed within the contaminated zone. The wells are connected to blowers or vacuum pumps, which induce a continuous airflow through the pores of the unsaturated zone. The soil surface is sometimes covered with an impermeable seal, made from high density polyethylene (HDPE) or bentonite clay for example, to prevent the vertical influx of air from the surface, which might cause short-circuiting problems, and promote horizontal gas flow through the contaminated area. The airstream, which contains the contaminant vapors, passes initially through an air-water separation unit to remove the entrained moisture and is then directed to the gas treatment unit, where the contaminants are thermally destroyed or removed by adsorption. [Pg.523]

The SS/SH barrier concept is based on the assumption that two reactive materials placed in layers will react at the interface to form an insoluble precipitate. The precipitate is designed to form a seamless, impermeable seal that will prevent the transmission of leachate and contaminants to the surrounding media. [Pg.1122]

The Nitro-dur system, marketed by Key Pharmaceuticals, Inc., contains nitroglycerin in acryUc-based polymeric adhesives with a cross-linking agent for polymer stabiUty. This depot of dmg provides a continuous source of active ingredient. An impermeable backing prevents release of nitroglycerin away from the skin. The systems are individually sealed in a paper polyethylene-foil pouch (81). [Pg.230]

Centralized make-up of toxic chemicals in master batches for transfer in sealed containers or impermeable bags. [Pg.106]

The analysis of simultaneous diffusion and chemical reaction in porous catalysts in terms of effective diffusivities is readily extended to geometries other than a sphere. Consider a flat plate of porous catalyst in contact with a reactant on one side, but sealed with an impermeable material along the edges and on the side opposite the reactant. If we assume simple power law kinetics, a reaction in which there is no change in the number of moles on reaction, and an isothermal flat plate, a simple material balance on a differential thickness of the plate leads to the following differential equation... [Pg.451]

Attempts to study the entry of ES products into cells using markers of fluid phase endocytosis yielded unexpected results. When larvae browse resistant IEC-6 cells in the presence of extracellular fluorescent dextran, dextran enters the cytoplasm of a significant proportion of the cells in the mono-layer (Butcher et al., 2000). The parameters of dextran entry are most compatible with the conclusion that larvae wound the plasma membranes of IEC-6 cells that is, they create transient breaches in the membrane that allow impermeant markers to enter the cell (McNeil and Ito, 1989). Wounding is considered to be a common occurrence in intestinal epithelia (McNeil and Ito, 1989). Injured cells are able to heal their wounds by recruiting vesicles to seal the breach (Steinhardt et al., 1994). In an experimental system, healing allows the injured cell to retain cytoplasmic dextran. In epithelial cell cultures inoculated with T. spiralis larvae, the relationship between glycoprotein delivery and injury of plasma membranes is not clear, i.e. dextran-laden cells do not always stain with Tyv-specific antibodies and... [Pg.121]

Remove all clothing and personal effects segregating them as either durable or nondurable items. Although it may be possible to decontaminate durable items, it may be safer and more efficient to destroy nondurable items rather than attempt to decontaminate them. Items that will be retained for further processing should be double sealed in impermeable... [Pg.17]
