The Call to Action

Executives and directors in the chemical industry must recognize the breadth of their responsibility. Sustainability is not just about managing the corporation. It is about leading society, industry, and government towards a sustainable future (Holliday et al., 2002).

In the sample conclusions offered later in this lesson, notice how the anecdote conclusion frames the Dumbo essay by repeating the opening question and providing a more sophisticated answer. Similarly, the call to action conclusion frames the To eat or not to eat essay by referring to the essay s opening lines. 

Banks looked back all the way to the dinosaurs, a dominant species that failed to meet a challenge. We do not know, he said, what challenge we may have to meet. It could be the atomic age—or it could be our tampering with our environment. Subcontractor/supplier performance will be evident from audit reports, surveillance visit reports, and receipt inspections carried out by you or the third party if one has been employed. You need to examine these documents for evidence that the subcontractor s quality system is controlling the quality of the products and services supplied. You can determine the effectiveness of these controls by periodic review of the subcontractor s performance what some firms call vendor rating . By collecting data on the performance of subcontractors/suppliers over a long period you can measure their effectiveness and rate them on a scale from excellent to poor. In such cases you should measure at least three characteristics quality, delivery, and service. Quality would be measured by the ratio of defective conforming products received delivery would be measured by the number of days early or late and service would be measured by the responsiveness to actions requested by you on scale of excellent to poor. The output of these reviews should be in the form of updates to the list of assessed subcontractors/suppliers. 

On a separate sheet of paper or on your computer, write a conclusion for the other introduction you wrote for Lesson 12. Use one of the following strategies a prediction, solution or recommendation, or call to action. 

Like introductions, conclusions serve several important functions. They refocus the essay by restating the thesis they offer a gift to the reader in the form of a new understanding (which is an extension of the thesis) they provide a sense of closure and they arouse readers emotions. Some of the same strategies for introductions also work for conclusions, including quotations, questions, and anecdotes. Other closing techniques include predictions, solutions or recommendations, and calls to action. 

In 1997, President Clinton devoted one-quarter of his State of the Union address to education and issued a Call to Action for American Education. Among the several ambitious goals he set for the nation was to have a well-prepared teacher in every classroom (Clinton, 1997). President Clinton s successor, George W. Bush, also recognized the need to improve the quality of teaching and learning for all children. President Bush s No Child Left Behind initiative had a strong focus on mathematics and science (No Child Left Behind Act of 2000).

It was reported by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) in 2000 that fewer than 5 percent of physicians were writing prescriptions electronically. In a 2000 white paper entitled, A Call to Action Eliminate Handwritten Prescriptions within 3 Years, ISMP recommended the use of electronic prescribing by clinician order entry to reduce medication errors (ISMP, 2000). CPOE can help to reduce errors in the delivery and transcribing of orders to the pharmacy where the orders are filled. Order management can be used to control inventory and alert pharmacy staff (and even the patient) of the status of a prescription. For example, some national chain pharmacies have the capability of alerting the patient by phone or e-mail if a prescription is ready or if other action needs to be taken before the prescription can be picked up. The system should also be able to report results, such as the number of prescriptions filled, the revenue generated over a specified time, and medication error reports.

To say that the revolution will occur when and because capitalist relations become suboptimal, is to say that it will occur at the earliest time s satisfying the last-mention condition. Let us call this time T,. It is not obvious that transition at time T, is very attractive as an ideal, independently of the capacity of the suboptimality to motivate the workers to action. If this transition time is advocated, it must be because the growth of the productive forces is seen as the only superiority of communism over capitalism. This, however, is contrary to Marx s view. Formally, we ask whether there is a time < T, and a time s > s such that for all / > s, /,(/) >/(/), even if by assumption /,(s) transition time will postpone the time at which communism becomes superior. Hence there is a trade-off to be considered. Should the material conditions for communism be developed by capitalism, which is the more rapid way, or should one prefer the slower development whereby communism itself creates the conditions for its own future blossoming ... 

What Are the Steps to Implement a Sustainability Audit Process In 1987, the World Commission on Environment and Development (Brundtland Commission) called for the development of new ways to measure and assess progress towards sustainable development (USD, 1997). The refinement of a sustainable development audit process has been ongoing since that initial call to action from the Brundtland Commission yet, to date, a fully mature audit process for assessing sustainable development has not yet emerged. Several notable efforts have been undertaken, however, which have provided a leap forward in the maturation process.

Much has been made of the impetus to pursuing science and engineering careers that was generated by the launch of Sputnik in October 1957. The experience at Alcoa shows that the fiaundation for work in patient safety is nurturing a culture, or people system, that sees, lives, and breathes safety. This is not about cautioning people to be more careful. This is a call to action. It is about improving the systems in which people operate and increasing their ability to perceive, identify, and close the gaps in the system that create vulnerability. Insufficient sleep and insomnia have been identified as contributing to significant cardiovascular morbidity. These findings represent a call to action make sleep evaluation and improvement a mission of modern society. A first step is happening now spread the news to educate the population. The next one is at its dawn offer affordable solutions to detect and improve sleep. Mobile technology has great potential to serve an important role in the fulfillment of this mission.
