Baby boom

From 1950 to 2000, the US population has grown from 152 million to 274 million, an annual rate of 1.2% per year and an increase of more than 120 million people. However, the growth was more rapid in the 1950s and 1960s—a reflection of the post WWII baby-boom (Table 1.2). Consequently, there has been a gradual increase in the percentage of the elderly as time passed. In 1950, 8.1% of the population were more than 65 years of age by 2000 this had increased to 12.6% and is projected to increase even more dramatically by 2050 (Fig. 1.12). With this in mind, Dr. Brouchard thought of some ideas for value-added pharmacy services that he could pursue. Similar but less conspicuous developments took place in East Greenwich Village at about the same time—and half a year later the new style was evident in the low-rent centers of most large U.S. cities. The participants were mainly whites in their teens to thirties, the "baby boom sons and daughters of people who were secure financially.

Back to when the possibility that the world could be remade sparkled in the sunshine of what will seem to be, as it recedes into history, a time of perpetual summer—the summer of love, of Woodstock,... 

There in a nutshell was the problem vis-a-vis a psychedelic politics these substances opened up much too much. They were a doorway into a universe of strange and sometimes terrifying information. These were not facile tools rather, they were an invitation to explorers, and a percentage of the Baby Boom s best and brightest responded by turning into mind wanderers, seeking adventure in the unclaimed real estate of the imagination. 

The complete telling of this story, which strikes me as one of the archetypal stories of the Baby Boom generation, is contained in Terence McKennas True Hallucinations, a book that was composed in the fullness of time, years after the occurrence of the events it describes. Since the baby boom of the 1950s, families in this country have been growing smaller. Today, somewhere between 20 and 30 percent of dual- and single-parent families are limited to an only child. Many factors lie behind this change.
