Technical forums

The utility and value of the ability to solution deposit inorganic materials must be promoted and discussed in a variety of forums, both technical and nontechnical. In general, the technical forums are required to share observations during experimentation as well as product development. Forums such as workshops, symposia, ad hoc consortia, and study groups are necessary to provide an environment for engineers and scientists to disclose and discuss problems and solutions. The International Sunflower Association is a worldwide organization based in Paris, France. Its main function is to promote technical communication on sunflower research worldwide. The association publishes an annual Year Book, which is a membership directory. It also organizes a technical forum every four years. In addition, dovetailing with the technical forum, the association hold symposia every other year.

The development and use of appropriate standards for SCC response in both research and characterization for application is extremely important if continued improvements in the literature database are to be realized. ASTM has put forth the most extensive effort in this endeavor, dating to the early 1960s, with the first standard published in 1972 (ASTM G 30). Since that time, 17 standards have been published on specimens, environments, alIo3 , and classifications, but only three have been added since the first edition of Manual 20. The development of such standards deaUng with stress corrosion has been the responsibility of ASTM Subcommittee GO 1.06 on Stress Corrosion Cracking and Corrosion Fatigue, under ASTM Committee GOl on Corrosion of Metals. An additional important contribution to the standards development process is the sponsorship of technical symposia, which provide an effective technical forum for specialists to present current work in progress. The subcommittee has sponsored nine such symposia [1,41,58-64 ], which have served as catalysts for many developed standards.

The NDT Newsgroup and other forums are playing an important role in expediting meeting and communieation among your NDT colleagues on the Internet - Email is the most important tool for that. Not only technical discussions but also business to business or even direct inquiries are today handled via the Internet. Statistics are presented with more information on specific usage. 

EURACHEM is a network of organizations in Europe, having the objective of establishing a system for the international traceability of chemical measurements and the promotion of good quality practices. It provides a forum for the discussion of common problems and for developing an informed and considered approach to both technical and policy issues. 

The Technical Support Working Group is the U.S. national forum that identifies, prioritizes, and coordinates interagency and international research and development requirements for combating terrorism.

US-EPA has formed the Risk Assessment Forum, a standing committee of senior US-EPA scientists, to promote US-EPA consensus on difficult and controversial risk assessment issues and to ensure that this consensus is incorporated into appropriate US-EPA risk assessment guidance. To fulhil this purpose, the Forum assembles US-EPA risk assessment experts in a formal process to study and report on issues from a US-EPA scientific perspective. Major Fomm guidance documents are developed in accordance with the US-EPA s regulatory and policy development process and become US-EPA pohcy upon approval by the Administrator or the Deputy Administrator. The Risk Assessment Forum products include risk assessment guidelines, technical panel reports on special risk assessment issues, and peer consultation and peer review workshops addressing controversial risk assessment topics. 

The Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology (DART) Technical Committee at HESI has been continually active in the development of alternative tests by providing a forum to exchange information and data and by its organizational framework to pool resources for collaborative efforts. 

One important forum for international harmonisation is the UNECE-WP29. It has made two proposals for UNECE regulation on hydrogen vehicles that are now under consideration for potential implementation as European Directives. However, a full consensus has not yet been reached at the international level. Non-European players, namely the US and Japan are seen to favour a direct development of global technical regulations. 

The UK Fuel Cell Vision Paper also focuses on demonstrations to prove the economic and technical feasibility of fuel cell technology and build awareness of fuel cells benefits. Also, the government-sponsored Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP) will ensure that UK industry is fully involved in the shift to low-carbon transport, providing a forum for all stakeholders to work towards this goal.
