Technical Discussion

The original bar graph presentation showed a very large scatter of data which ranged from less than 10 pg kg of TBT to more than 150 pg kg . Detailed discussions were necessary to explain the sources of discrepancies. Some laboratories reported not detected values ranging from less than 15 pg kg to less than 60 pg kg .  

The methods using hydride generation and AAS as final determination were, however, in considerable difficulty with this complicated matrix, due to unknown interferences either at the derivatization step or in AAS detection, or determination limits which were too low. As observed by the participants, the laboratories using gas chromatographic separation and detection either by FPD or MS tended to agree, which would confirm that these methods would be more suited to the determination of TBT in this particular material. 

Although the analytical methods involving hydride generation were successfully applied in an interlaboratory study on TBT in spiked sediment [43] as well as in the certification of TBT and DBT in the CRM 462 (coastal sediment) [70], it was concluded that the low TBT mass fractions and the complicated matrix did not allow the use of these methods for an accurate TBT determination in this material. It was stressed that, although certification was contemplated at the start of the interlaboratory study, this materia] would probably not be suited as a CRM for the following reasons  

The reference value (unweighted mean of 8 accepted sets of results) and its standard deviation is (20 5) pg kg as mass fractions (based on dry mass) of TBT cation. Indicative values were given for DBT and MBT, respectively (53 19) pg kg as DBT cation (6 sets of results GC-FPD, GC-MS and GC-AAS) and (257 54) pg kg as MBT cation (3 sets of results GC-FPD, GC-MS).

The polymerized 2-cyano acrylate (n=8) shown in Fig. 2.15a is a simple model to demonstrate a polymer of n=8, and the correct atom-bond configuration of substituents and conformational molecular structure is shown in Fig. 2.15b in a planar or two-dimensional form, and the three-dimensional stick and ball models in Fig. 2.16a and b rotated about the T-axis 90°. 

The long extensions of the -R groups are three-dimensionally arranged around the polymer back-bone chain, and the floppy chains prevent the formation of a lattice and therefore crystallization. Plasticization with materials ester-benzoates would further separate the molecules and provide more flexible hardened cement. 

The protocol was structured to test the barrier properties of the Liquid BandageR product on rats when challenged with inoculations of bacteria, and the results successful.

Evaluation of the results Evaluation of the results consists of (i) technical scrutiny of the consistency and of the quality of the data the acceptance, on technical (not statistical) grounds, of data to be used to calculate the certified value and its uncertainty, (2) the calculation (using the appropriate statistical techniques) of the certified value and its uncertainty. The approach indudes technical discussion of the results among all cooperators, rejection of outliers, statistical evaluation, and calculation of the certified value and uncertainties.

When using the term flavor , a certain inherent understanding of the term is evident. However, its use in the technical discussion of food requires a more imprecise definition. A common technical definition of the word flavor is the sum total of the sensory responses of taste and aroma combined with the general tactile and temperature responses to substances placed in the mouth. Flavor can also mean any individual substance or combination of substances used for the principal purpose of eliciting the latter responses. This latter usage will be the way in which the term is used in this chapter.

Pais, Abraham. Niels Bohr s Times. Oxford Oxford University Press, 1991. Some of the technical discussions in this magisterial book might be daunting to the lay reader. However, it contains the best and most comprehensive account of Bohr s life. The reader who skips the technical material and reads only the narrative is likely to be richly rewarded.

In a similar vein, technical discussions in textbooks and papers, up to only a few years ago, tended to cover problems such as corrosion, carbonate scaling, and microbiological control as individual topics that were somehow unrelated to each other. Such discussions were often quite theoretical and had little in common with field practicalities and realities. 

The literature on creativity includes analytical description of the components of creative experience, the personal characteristics of creative individuals, and the distinguishing features of creative solutions. From the participants reports, it was possible to extract eleven strategies of enhanced functioning during the session. The relationship of these strategies to enhanced functioning should be self-explanatory. Those readers interested in the relationship of these aspects to current research and theory on creativity can refer to the detailed technical discussion in Harman, McKim et al. (1966).
