Talc uses

Most talc sold to paper, ceramics, and other industrial customers is manufactured to specifications agreed to between the producer and consumer. In paper, properties such as color, abrasion, surface area, and tint ate most important, whereas in ceramics, oxide chemistry, fired color, pressing characteristics, and alkaH metal content ate mote important. There ate some military specifications for talc used in corrosive coatings (6) and for cosmetic talc products used for cleaning of personnel in chemical warfare zones (7).

Dichlorodifluoromethane is used as an aerosol propellant in metered-dose inhaler (MDI) formulations, either as the sole propellant or in combination with dichlorotetrafluoroethane, trichloromonofluoromethane, or mixtures of these chlorofluorocarbons. Dichlorodifluoromethane may also be used as a propellant in an aerosolized sterile talc used for intrapleural administration and is also used alone in some MDIs containing a steroid.

Use cleaned plastic collection tubes with stoppers. The whole set (tube and stopper) must be tested to deliver less than 10% extraneous amounts of cadmium. Do not use coloured stoppers. Do not use plastics with a Cd-softener. Before starting the study test 6 test tubes per tube production lot. During the study frequently test blank tubes, e.g. for 1% of the total number of samples to study. Test may be performed with a 1% v/v solution of nitric acid (e.g. Suprapur quality) in bidistilled water. Preferably use vacuum collection tubes. No special type of needles is required. Needles of stainless steel are adequate. Other needles, e.g. siliconized or iridium needles may be used as well but are not necessary. Use vinyl gloves, free of talc. Use cleaned plastic test tubes. See further collection tubes. Do not use glassware. 

Talcum (talc, 14807-96-6) is a natural hydrous magnesium silicate that can be associated with deposits of crude asbestos. Industrial talc, used extensively as a filler in plastics, cosmetics, coatings, lubricating compositions, and polishes may contain or be strengthened with up to 2 particles per 100 of asbestos fibre. 

Talc is typically used at up to 50% loading, in particle sizes of 1-100 pm. "General purpose, coarse talcs (used in WPCs, for example) have particle sizes above 5 pm, while "fine talcs have median particle sizes between 2 and 4 pm and are particularly important for high-impact automotive TPO applications. Body putty n. A paste-like mixture of plant resin, often a polyester, and a filler such as talc, used to smooth and repair metal surfaces such as auto bodies. 

The talc used in filled PP experiments was CIMPACT 710, a nonsurface-treated micronized talc, with an average particle size of 1 (xm, from Luzenac America. 

Talc is an industrial mineral found in deposits throughout the world. Major commercial deposit areas are shown in Fig. 8.1. The major sources of talc used in polypropylene are available from mines in the United States, Canada, France, Austria, Italy, Australia, China, and India. 

The primary use for talc in polypropylene and its copolymers is to increase the stiffness of the compound. The amount of talc used in a compound has a direct effect on the level of stiffness obtained. The addition of a 20% talc loading to a homopolymer with a flexural modulus of 200 Kpsi (1382 MPa) will increase the stiffness to approximately 400 Kpsi (2764 MPa), whereas a 40% loading will... 

Talc is inert to almost all chemical reagents and does not decompose when in contact with various acids. Pure talc is a very soft material and has a slippery texture. Natural talc may be white, gray, yellow, pale blue, or pale green with a characteristically silver or pearllike luster. Most commercial talcs used as fillers are finely ground. The finest grinds usually have an average size of 1 p,m coarser sizes are in the region of 10-75 pm. 

Commercial grades of talc used for plastics applications are line-ground products consisting of thin platelets, preferably white in color. Because of their platelike structure, these grades are considered reinforcing fillers, as distinguished from particulate mineral extender fillers.

The above coverage of talc is not intended to raise new suspicions about talc. There are too many substances to alarm the public s concern without adding another. Additionally, the talc industry has done much to mine talc that is not contaminated with mineral fibers, particularly for talc used for cosmetic reasons. Mineral fibers can no longer be observed in most of the products being sold today. 

Talc used in ceramics is usually mined, sorted, crushed, and milled to 95-99% -200 mesh. MiUing is done in roUer mills for softer massive ores while ball mills are used for harder tremohtic products. Products are shipped as a dry powder, mostly in 50 pound bags but the use of supersacks is increasing and larger customers use bulk rail or truck. Some product is calcined prior to shipping and this wiU usually improve dry pressing characteristics.
