Talc [14807-96-6], a naturally occurring mineral of the general chemical composition Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, is a crystalline hydrous magnesium silic ate belonging to the general mineral family of the layered silicates. Other layered silicates are kaolin, mica, and pyrophyllite (1). 

The three-sheet or 2 1 layer lattice silicates consist of two silica tetrahedral sheets between which is an octahedral sheet. These three sheets form a layer approximately 10 A thick. The oxygens at the tips of the tetrahedra point towards the center octahedral sheet and substitute for two-thirds of the octahedrally coordinated hydroxyls. The 2 1 clay minerals include the mica and smectite groups which are by far the most abundant of the clay minerals. The pure end members of this type are talc, a hydrous magnesium silicate pyrophyllite, a hydrous aluminum silicate and minnesotaite, a hydrous iron silicate.

A 1 gram-equivalent portion of N-(3-acetylphenyl)ethanamide in equivalent portion of dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal was refluxed for 8 hours, then evaporated. The residue was taken up in 200 ml of dichloromethane, passed through hydrous magnesium silicate, diluted with hexane and concentrated, giving the desired compound. 

Soapstone or steatite is a hydrous magnesium silicate material which is composed essentially of the mineral talc, with varying quantities of carbonate minerals, chlorite, amphibole magnetite, and various other minerals (J). Steatite is very soft, easily cut, and has a somewhat greasy or soapy feel from which it derives its common name. 

Hydrous magnesium silicate, is an industrial talc. It is available in four grades, two fine talcs and two ultrafine air milled grades with excellent white color.

Asbestos, which is a term for a group of hydrous magnesium silicate minerals with a fibrous texture, is another silicate of technological significance. The structure of these minerals is characterized by long silicate chains. The most important variety is chrysotile Mg3Si205(0H)4, a fibrous form of serpentine.
