Urea is also used as a protein food supplement for ruminants, in melamine production, and as an ingredient in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals (e.g., barbiturates), synthetic resins, plastics (urethanes), adhesives, coatings, textile antishrink agents, and ion exchange resins. Epoxides are formed by oxidation of ole-finic or aromatic double bond. The oxidizing agents for such epoxidation reactions are peracids or peroxides with or without catalysts. The epoxy compounds are widely used as intermediates to produce synthetic resins, plasticizers, cements, adhesives, and other materials. [Pg.348]

Plastics. Vehicles in offset inks for plastics (polyethylene, polystyrene, vinyl) are based on hard drying oleoresinous varnishes which sometimes are diluted with hydrocarbon solvents. Ammonia is used in the fibers and plastic industry as the source of nitrogen for the production of caprolactam, the monomer for nylon 6. Oxidation of propylene with ammonia gives acrylonitrile (qv), used for the manufacture of acryHc fibers, resins, and elastomers. Hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA), produced from ammonia and formaldehyde, is used in the manufacture of phenoHc thermosetting resins (see Phenolic resins). Toluene 2,4-cHisocyanate (TDI), employed in the production of polyurethane foam, indirectly consumes ammonia because nitric acid is a raw material in the TDI manufacturing process (see Amines Isocyanates). Urea, which is produced from ammonia, is used in the manufacture of urea—formaldehyde synthetic resins (see Amino resins). Melamine is produced by polymerization of dicyanodiamine and high pressure, high temperature pyrolysis of urea, both in the presence of ammonia (see Cyanamides). [Pg.358]

Vatty Acids andFattyAcidLsters. Sulfolane exhibits selective solvency for fatty acids and fatty acid esters which depends on the molecular weight and degree of fatty acid unsaturation (40—42). Whereas celluloid was the first plastics material obtained by chemical modification of a polymer to be exploited, the phenolics were the first commercially successful fully synthetic resins. Although development work on shellac in blends with other synthetic resins has been carried out over a period of time, the only current use in the plastics industry is in the manufacture of electrical insulators. Whereas plastic pertains to polymers or resins containing additives, fillers, and/or reinforcements. Recognize that practically all materials worldwide contain some type of additive or ingredient. An elastomer is a rubberlike material (natural or synthetic).
