Thyroid extract is used in the treatment of hypothyroidism, myxedema, and cretinism. It is also used as a diagnostic agent and for suppression of pituitary thyroid-stimulating hormone. Synthetic derivatives are preferred because of uniform potency.

Of the 10000 or so chemicals in the environment that are suspected of endocrine disruption, several are of particular importance due to their potential significant impact on human health, and the prevalence of use of the compounds. These are the range of antibiotics for human and veterinary uses and hormones, synthetic and natural, known to affect the reproductive system of humans. Although the studies have been relatively few in number, activated carbon adsorption appears to be one of the best available technologies for the removal of these compounds [57—60].

This reaction is very useful for the preparation of unnatural, nonproteinogenic amino acids that are used for the synthesis of immunostimulants, hormones, synthetic enzymes, and peptide drugs with special biological properties. 

Because they are close structural derivatives of the natural hormones, synthetic estrogens and progestins are probably poorly immunogenic. Nonetheless, there is no literature on the role of oral contraceptive drugs (OCDs) as either antigens or haptens (Pelikan 1970) despite their use by over 50 million women worldwide (Murad and Haynes 1980).
