Resinous plasticizers

Much of the benzoic acid produced is converted to sodium benzoate, which is used as a food preservative (as is the acid) and a corrosion inhibi tor. Other important uses of the acid are in the manufacture of alkyd resins, plasticizers, caprolactam, dyestuffs and pharmaceuticals. [Pg.56]

Plastics and Resins. Plastics and resin materials are high molecular weight polymers which at some stage in their manufacture can be shaped or otherwise processed by appHcation of heat and pressure. Some 40—50 basic types of plastics and resins are available commercially, but HteraHy thousands of different mixtures (compounds) are made by the addition of plasticizers, fillers, extenders, stabilizers, coloring agents, etc. [Pg.369]

In addition to polyamide, lamination inks ordinarily contain modifiers such as polyketone resin, plasticizer, and wax to impart specific properties such as block resistance and increased bond strength. Because laminating inks are usually reverse-side printed and end-up sandwiched between films, gloss is not a primary requirement. Water-base laminating inks that will meet the U.S. EPA emission requirements and have the correct functional properties are currently under development. [Pg.252]

PVB resins are also compatible with a limited number of plasticizers and resins. Plasticizers (qv) improve processibility, lower T, and increase flexibihty and resiUency over a broad temperature range. Usehil plasticizers include dibutyl and butyl benzyl phthalates, tricresyl and 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphates, butyl ricinoleate, dibutyl sebacate, dihexyl adipate, triethylene glycol di-2-ethylbutyrate, tetraethylene glycol diheptanoate, castor oil, and others (64-73). [Pg.452]

In the United States all other processes have been completely phased out and virtually all benzoic acid is manufactured by the continuous hquid-phase air oxidation of toluene. In the late 1950s and the early 1960s both Dow Chemical and Snia Viscosa constmcted faciUties for Hquid-phase toluene oxidation because of large requirements for benzoic acid in the production of phenol and caprolactam. Benzoic acid, its salts, and esters are very useful and find appHcation in medicinals, food and industrial preservatives, cosmetics, resins, plasticizers, dyestuffs, and fibers. [Pg.52]

Nearly all of the benzyl chloride [100-44-7], henzal chloride [98-87-3], and hen zotrichl oride /P< -(97-i manufactured is converted to other chemical intermediates or products by reactions involving the chlorine substituents of the side chain. Each of the compounds has a single primary use that consumes a large portion of the compound produced. Benzyl chloride is utilized in the manufacture of benzyl butyl phthalate, a vinyl resin plasticizer benzal chloride is hydrolyzed to benzaldehyde hen zotrichl oride is converted to benzoyl chloride. Benzyl chloride is also hydrolyzed to benzyl alcohol, which is used in the photographic industry, in perfumes (as esters), and in peptide synthesis by conversion to benzyl chloroformate [501-53-1] (see Benzyl ALCOHOL AND p-PHENETHYL ALCOHOL CARBONIC AND CARBONOCm ORIDIC ESTERS). [Pg.58]

The main uses of toluene are as a solvent in paints, rubber, and plastic cements and as a feedstock in the manufacture of organic chemicals, explosives, detergents, and polyurethane foams. Xylenes (which exist as three isomers) are used in the manufacture of DMT, alkyd resins, and plasticizers. Naphthalene is mainly used in the manufacture of dyes, pharmaceuticals, insect repellents, and phthalic anhydride (used in the manufacture of alkyd resins, plasticizers, and polyester). [Pg.55]

PVC resin, plasticizers, and additives are weighed according to the recipe and mixed in a high-speed mixer. This mixture is then processed at 140-I80°C for a certain period of time to form the preplasticized PVC. The TPU is then added and further blending is performed until completion, depending on each case. [Pg.142]

Compound 1 is used as a solvent in the food, paint, resin/plastics, soap and woodpulp/paper industries, and as a plasticizer. Compound 2 is used as an intermediate for the manufacture of hydraulic fluid additives and cosmetics. Sulphonal (2 2-his(ethylsulphonyl)-propane), another important sulphone, is a colourless solid, stable to acids and alkalis, with hypnotic properties. [Pg.39]

The list of new chemicals whose presence in the environment represents an ascertained or potential risk is sizeable and broadly contains resins, plastics, and plastic additives (e.g., plasticizers and flame retardants) pharmaceuticals and personal care products (e.g., disinfectants, fragrances, sunscreens, antibiotics, drugs of abuse, and natural and synthetic hormones) detergents and other cleaning... [Pg.273]

He found out in 1909 that a resinous plastic substance is formed in this reaction. This substance could be heated and moulded into a shape. Further heating of a substance in the mould sets it in the fine shape. Further heating does not resoften this substance. Baekeland patented this substance and called it Bakelite. Bakelite was the first Synthetic polymer. The industry of Bakelite led to a study and establishment success of polymer science. [Pg.40]

Maleic anhydride is a cyclic anhydride with one double bond in the ring and two double-bonded oxygens hanging off the ring. The resulting reactivity leads to maleics use in making polymers, unsaturated polyesters, alkyd resins, plasticizers, and dicarboxylic acids. [Pg.299]

In the plastisol propellant process, it is essential that the resin particles not solvate too rapidly at processing temperature since a rapid increase in viscosity of the propellant mix interferes with the mixing and casting operation. There must be adequate pot life of the mixed propellant. The resin-plasticizer system itself is the dominating influence on pot life, and for this reason certain combinations cannot be used in the plastisol process. [Pg.45]

Sometimes, the relationship between two variables is obscured by the presence of a third variable which may of may not be related to the other two. In order to clarify the relationship, we may want to remove or account for the effect of the third variable. For example, we may want to find the effect of plasticizer viscosity on the hardness of a resin-plasticizer mix. But some plasticizers are more efficient than others, and this factor may obscure the relationship. What we are really looking for is some way of separating out these effects. For example, in the simpler linear correlation study, we Came up with an equation of the form... [Pg.23]

Some pyrotechnic formulations based on epoxy-resin-plasticized RP in combination with Mg and other additives could screen IR radiation (0.82 pm, 3.0-5.0pm and 10.6 pm wavelengths) with high efficiency under field conditions and prove to be suitable for smoke grenades of modem construction [41]. [Pg.371]
