Sulfur SULFONIC ACIDS

Sulfonic acids can come from the sulfonation of oil cuts from white oil production by sulfuric acid treatment. Sodium salts of alkylaromatic sulfonic acids are compounds whose aliphatic chains contain around 20 carbon atoms. The aromatic ring compounds are mixtures of benzene and naphthalene rings. [Pg.360]

To solve some of the environmental problems of mixed-acid nitration, we were able to replaee sulfuric acid with solid superacid catalysts. This allowed us to develop a novel, clean, azeotropic nitration of aromatics with nitric acid over solid perfluorinated sulfonic acid catalysts (Nafion-H). The water formed is continuously azeotroped off by an excess of aromatics, thus preventing dilution of acid. Because the disposal of spent acids of nitration represents a serious environmental problem, the use of solid aeid eatalysts is a significant improvement. [Pg.105]

Esters. Most acryhc acid is used in the form of its methyl, ethyl, and butyl esters. Specialty monomeric esters with a hydroxyl, amino, or other functional group are used to provide adhesion, latent cross-linking capabihty, or different solubihty characteristics. The principal routes to esters are direct esterification with alcohols in the presence of a strong acid catalyst such as sulfuric acid, a soluble sulfonic acid, or sulfonic acid resins addition to alkylene oxides to give hydroxyalkyl acryhc esters and addition to the double bond of olefins in the presence of strong acid catalyst (19,20) to give ethyl or secondary alkyl acrylates. [Pg.150]

Direct, acid catalyzed esterification of acryhc acid is the main route for the manufacture of higher alkyl esters. The most important higher alkyl acrylate is 2-ethyIhexyi acrylate prepared from the available 0x0 alcohol 2-ethyl-1-hexanol (see Alcohols, higher aliphatic). Manufacture of Fatty Acids and Derivatives. Splitting of fats to produce fatty acids and glycerol (a valuable coproduct) has been practiced since before the 1890s. In early processes, concentrated alkaU reacted with fats to produce soaps followed by acidulation to produce the fatty acids. The choice of catalyst is based primarily on economic effects and product purity requirements. More recentiy, the handling of waste associated with the choice of catalyst has become an important factor in the economic evaluation. Catalysts that produce less waste and more easily handled waste by-products are strongly preferred by alkylphenol producers. Sodium Bisulfite. Sodium bisulfite [7631-90-5] NaHSO, is occasionally used to perform simultaneous reduction of a nitro group to an amine and the addition of a sulfonic acid group. Dyes, Dye Intermediates, and Naphthalene. Several thousand different synthetic dyes are known, having a total worldwide consumption of 298 million kg/yr (see Dyes AND dye intermediates). Many dyes contain some form of sulfonate as —SO H, —SO Na, or —SO2NH2. Acid dyes, solvent dyes, basic dyes, disperse dyes, fiber-reactive dyes, and vat dyes can have one or more sulfonic acid groups incorporated into their molecular stmcture. The raw materials used for the manufacture of dyes are mainly aromatic hydrocarbons (67—74) and include ben2ene, toluene, naphthalene, anthracene, pyrene, phenol (qv), pyridine, and carba2ole.
