Start risks

Risk and risk assessment are one of the fundamental ways safety and unsafety is managed on UK construction sites, and are prescribed by law. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (1999) require that risks associated with any work activity are assessed before work starts. Risk assessments form the basis of many Health and Safety Regulations, and a standardised format and prescribed approach to the process often forms part of the safety management system toolkit in the establishment of safe systems of work. ... [Pg.94]

With regard to chemical pollutants, the objective of an EIS seems two-fold, i.e. (1) to predict unwanted, possibly adverse consequences of associated chemicals before a project starts (risk analysis) and (2) to safeguard project implementation, development, and termination, according to accepted emission and quality criteria (compliance monitoring, OECD 1979). [Pg.26]

A brainstorm is a useful technique to start risk identification. This may start with a presentation of a problem using preliminary information or already processed data. A preliminary evaluation of the possible harms to the patients may be presented to increase motivation. The brainstorm may be rather informal or more structured depending on the issue, the participants and traditions in the organisation. The goal is achieving, within short time, as many ideas as possible and engaging and focussing the participants. [Pg.427]

When a customer agrees to purchase gas, product quality is specified in terms of the calorific value of the gas, measured by the Wobbe index (calorific value divided by density), the hydrocarbon dew point and the water dew point, and the fraction of other gases such as Nj, COj, HjS. The Wobbe index specification ensures that the gas the customer receives has a predictable calorific value and hence predictable burning characteristics. If the gas becomes lean, less energy is released, and if the gas becomes too rich there is a risk that the gas burners flame out . Water and hydrocarbon dew points (the pressure and temperature at which liquids start to drop out of the gas) are specified to ensure that over the range of temperature and pressure at which the gas is handled by the customer, no liquids will drop out (these could cause possible corrosion and/or hydrate formation). [Pg.194]

When a block is inside, the entrance panel is closed and the inspection is ready to start. The inside of the stainless steel X-ray tubehead housing is clad in lead with an on/ofT shutter in front of a thin plastic X-ray window. The thin window is to ensure the IP 65 classification. The window is of plastic that is not affected by the cleaning agents. The on/off shutter is interlocked with the entrance and exit panels so X-rays can be kept on at all times without risk of radiation leakage or exposure of the frozen fish blocks prior to the actual inspection. [Pg.591]

Another way is to define an improper torsion angle e- (for atoms 1-2-3-4 in Figure 7-11 in combination with a potential lihe V((r- = fc l-cos2fi.-), which has its minima at <> = 0 and 7t. This of course implies the risk that, if the starting geometry is far from reality, the optimi2 ation will perhaps lead to the wrong local minimum. [Pg.344]

Some scientific studies indicate that the gam in performance obtained through the use of anabolic steroids is small This may be a case though in which the anecdotal evidence of the athletes may be closer to the mark than the scientific studies The scientific studies are done under ethical conditions in which patients are treated with prescription level doses of steroids A 240 pound offensive tackle ( too small by todays standards) may take several ana bolic steroids at a time at 10-20 times their pre scribed doses in order to weigh the 280 pounds he (or his coach) feels is necessary The price athletes pay for gams in size and strength can be enormous This price includes emotional costs (friendships lost because of heightened aggressiveness) sterility testicular atro phy (the testes cease to function once the body starts to obtain a sufficient supply of testosterone like steroids from outside) and increased risk of prema ture death from liver cancer or heart disease... [Pg.1099]

The design or substantial modification of a new plant or process, its subsequent constmction, and start-up represent a tremendous investment of time and money. The rewards are great if a significant improvement is realized the risks are also great if a costiy commercial plant fails to produce as expected. To reduce the degree of risk, lengthy and expensive research programs are often undertaken. [Pg.39]

The understanding of these actions of aspirin started in 1971 (45) and resulted in the recommendations of the medical community that small doses of aspirin, used under the care of the doctor, may be a prevention measure for heart attack, and stroke for those considered at risk in the population. Further reported work may expand health benefits to prevention of certain kinds of cancer (46). [Pg.292]

Continuous processes have lower labor costs but have higher failure risk. Batch processes can be started back up in a shorter period of time than can a complex continuous process. Batch processes are easier to take through the regulatory process than are continuous processes. Thus batch processes are often chosen for mammalian ceU culture systems, even though continuous processes can offer significant cost advantages. CeU culture costs constitute only a smaU (10—30%) fraction of the overaU cost of making a product. [Pg.234]

A company may be considering a project with a very high potential rate of return and a low risk, but it may prove impossible to raise the money to start the project. Conversely, the company may be prepared to undertake an extremely risky project if the investment is trivial. Thus, the attitude of a company to risk depends on the circumstances. [Pg.828]

Rating (S) to give the target Cp. The program initially ealeulates a primer toleranee, (the statistieal sum of the primer toleranees equals the assembly toleranee, and allo-eates this to eaeh dimension. The primer toleranees are ealeulated using equation 3.23, whieh is derived from equation 3.21. They are used to start the optimization routine and their respeetive risk values A are ealeulated from the proeess eapability maps ... [Pg.125]

Operation includes nonual start-up, normal and emergency shutdown, and most activities performed by die production team. Whilst inlierently safe plant design limits inventories of hazardous substances, inherently safe operation ensures die number of individuals at risk are minimized. Access to die plant for non-essendal operational people such as maintenance engineers, post staff, administrators, quality control samplers, warehouse staff delivering raw material or plant items or collecting finished product, members of security, visitors etc., must be controlled. [Pg.413]

A database of the hazards associated with different types of equipment and unit operations including the applicability of inherently safer technology in each. As innovative solutions to hazards in equipment and process operations are discovered these could be included in this database for use by others in reducing risk in similar equipment and processes. A summary of design approaches for a number of common types of chemical process equipment will be published in CCPS (1997). This summary may be a starting point for the development of this database. [Pg.129]

The first step is to identify the substances present at the workplace. As a starting point, knowledge of the process is needed in order to formulate a list of all chemical agents used in the establishment. The list should include not only primary products but also intermediate and final products, as well as reaction products and by-products. For the chemical agents in the list, it is necessary to know their chemical properties, especially hazardous ones their OEL values, including biological limit values and, where these are not available, other technical criteria that can be used to evaluate the risk. It is also helpful to include any information on the safety and health risks of those substances provided by the supplier or other readily available sources. This information on dangerous substances and preparations, in the form of safety data sheets, is intended primarily for industrial users, to enable them to take the measures necessary to ensure the safety and health of workers. [Pg.369]

Start by doing a risk assessment and identify those things on which continuity of business depends power, water, labor, materials, components, services, etc. Determine what could cause a termination of supply and estimate the probability of occurrence. For those with a relatively high probability (1 in 100) find ways to reduce the probability. For those with lower probability (1 in 10000) determine the action needed to minimize the effect. The FMEA technique works for this as well as for products and processes. [Pg.365]

Preserving product while the product is under your control may be addressed by your handling and packaging provisions, but in-process preservation may also be necessary to protect finishes from deterioration during further processing. Such measures need to be specified in the work instructions for particular products. For products that start to deteriorate when the packaging seal is broken, the supplier s responsibility extends beyond delivery to the point of use. In such cases markings need to be applied to the containers to warn the consumers of the risks. [Pg.483]
