Solid removal, wastewater

For wet ESPs, consideration must be given to handling wastewaters. For simple systems with innocuous dusts, water with particles collected by the ESP may be discharged from the ESP system to a solids-removing clarifier (either dedicated to the ESP or part of the plant wastewater treatment system) and then to final disposal. More complicated systems may require skimming and sludge removal, clarification in dedicated equipment, pH adjustment, and/or treatment to remove dissolved solids. Spray water from an ESP preconditioner may be treated separately from the water used to wash the ESP collecting pipes so that the cleaner of the two treated water streams may be returned to the ESP. Recirculation of treated water to the ESP may approach 100 percent (AWMA, 1992). [Pg.433]

Aluminum based chemicals have been used for many years in wastewater treatment applications for suspended solids removal. These include dry and liquid alum, with sodium aluminate used in activated sludge plants for phosphorus removal. [Pg.91]

This section describes the treatment technologies currently in use to recover or remove wastewater pollutants normally found at coil coating facilities. The treatment processes can be divided into six categories recovery techniques, oil removal, dissolved inorganics removal, cyanide destruction, trace organics removal, and solids removal.5-14 Adoption of specific treatment processes will depend on the following ... [Pg.278]

Granular bed filters are used in ten coil coating plants to remove residual solids from the clarifier effluent, and are considered to be tertiary or advanced wastewater treatment. Chemicals may be added upstream to enhance the solids removal. Pressure filtration is also used in this industry to reduce the solids concentration in clarifier effluent and to remove excess water from the clarifier sludge. Figure 7.4 shows a granular bed filter and Table 7.13 presents the heavy metal removal data of a lime clarification and filtration system. [Pg.282]

Solids removal techniques are employed to remove metals and other pollutants from process wastewaters to make these waters suitable for reuse or discharge. These methods include5-7... [Pg.366]

Flotation is a solids removal process that introduces a gas, usually air, into the wastewater stream. The gas adheres to the suspended solids, reducing their density and causing them to rise to the surface of the water, where they are skimmed off. The advantage of flotation clarification over sedimentation is that lighter particles that require very long retention times to settle are removed more quickly. [Pg.893]

Determine the total mass of solids removed as a result of the lime dosage. The mass of TSS in wastewater is... [Pg.542]

In an effort to find a broader solution for the removal of numerous target ions, researchers [21] have been experimenting with photochemistry whereby a CMP waste stream (pretreated for solids removal) flows over a titanium dioxide substrate in the presence of ultraviolet light. As a result, the target ions in the CMP wastewater are then deposited on the surface of the titanium... [Pg.643]

FIGURE 19.8 A schematic of a CMP waste treatment system with oxidizer and metals removal, but no solids removal. This low-cost system is feasible if it is not necessary to reclaim or recycle the CMP wastewater, and if environmental regulations permit. [Pg.646]

Phosphorus is normally removed from wastewaters and, as such, the solids produced would include the original suspended solids or turbidity. Therefore, two sources contribute to the production of solids in phosphorus removal the original suspended solids and the solids produced from chemical reaction. If V is the cubic meters of water treated and sp s are the solids removed at a fractional efficiency of / , the kilograms of solids produced from the suspended solids is (/sT PsJmg/lOOO) /, where [spJmg is in mg/L. [Pg.659]

In addition to disinfection, ozone has been used in municipal wastewater treatment to enhance biodegradability of recalcitrant organic chemicals, control odor, improve suspended solids removal, improve the performance of granular activated carbon, and condition sludge. ... [Pg.1996]

General discussions on the applications of filtration to wastewater flows were given in previous chapters. These discussions have provided the reader with an understanding of the objectives of wastewater treatment and how filtration can be used as one of the unit operations for solids removal. Filtration must, however, be used in conjunction with other treatment technologies or operations, and does not necessarily represent the primary treatment method. It is beyond the scope of this volume to discuss the other techniques used in the treatmait of wastewater flows. For general information and backgroimd on other unit operations and processes used with filtration in the treatment of wastewaters, the reader may refer to the suggested references at the end of this chapter. [Pg.229]

If regulations do not allow land application of organic liquid fertilizer or no customers are found at all, aerobic biological treatment (wastewater treatment) followed by direct or indirect discharge is the most favorable option. But to reduce cost and increase efficiency of the aerobic treatment, an enhanced solid removal and a stripping step for the ammonia is necessary. In this way, two widely accepted fertilizer products are generated solid fertilizer rich in carbon, humus forming substances, and phosphorus and a liquid ammonium sulfate solution with stable composition and without smell. If needed, these products can be blended to produce fertilizer with typical NPK ratios. [Pg.288]

Remediation. Many companies specialize in hazardous-waste remediation by providing a variety of disposal services and equipment, not limited to catalytic oxidizers and carbon adsorption systems. Remediation includes reduction and cleanup of hazardous wastewater by using oil-water separators to separate oil and solids from wastewater effluents of petroleum-based industries. Other hazardous-vwiste remediation services include demolition and removal of hazardous materials such as asbestos, removal of leaky fuel tanks, cleanup of contaminated sods, and the construction of slurry walls to aid in the remediation of groundwater that is polluted with hazardous waste. Bioremediation is also a growing field that involves disposal of medical and laboratory wastes often by using microorganisms to break down the hazardous materials. [Pg.935]

Primary clarifier This settling tank removes gross solids from sewage by virtue of the difference between the density of the solids and the density of wastewater. Substances such as 1,4-DCB may volatilize, sorb to solids, biodegrade, or flow with the wastewater to the next tank. Solids removed from the tank are dewatered and removed for disposal. Critical variables include the retention time in the tank and the tank dimensions, which can affect the degree of solids removal, and the volatility, tendency to sorb to solids, and degradability of the compound itself. [Pg.24]
