Settling tank

On a land site where space and weight are not normally constraints, advantage can be taken of tank type separation equipment such as wash tanks and settling tanks, and batch processing methods. Such equipment is generally cheaper to maintain than continuous throughput vessels, though a combination of both may be required. [Pg.262]

The legs of the platform can be used as settling tanks or temporary storage facilities for crude oil where oil is exported via tankers, or to allow production to continue in the event of a pipeline shut down. The Brent D platform in the North Sea weighs more than 200,000 tonnes and can store over a million barrels of oil. Topside modules are either installed offshore by lift barges, or can be positioned before the platform is floated out. [Pg.266]

Orthokinetic flocculation is induced by the motion of the Hquid obtained, for example, by paddle stirring or any other means that produces shear within the suspension. Orthokinetic flocculation leads to exponential growth which is a function of shear rate and particle concentration. Large-scale one-pass clarifiers used in water installations employ orthokinetic flocculators before introducing the suspension into the settling tank (see Water,... [Pg.318]

Probably more relevant to the chemical industry is the scale-up of thickeners. Thickeners are basically gravity settling tanks that, apart from producing a clear overflow, are designed to have a thick underflow with as Htfle water content as possible. The feed into a thickener is generally more concentrated than the feed into a clarifier, and quite often exhibits zone-settling behavior because of the appHcation of flocculants. [Pg.319]

Sedimentation equipment can be divided into batch-operated settling tanks and continuously operated thickeners or clarifiers. The operation of the former is simple. Whereas use has diminished, these are employed when small quantities of Hquids are to be treated, for example in the cleaning and reclamation of lubricating oil (see Recycling, oil). Most sedimentation processes are operated in continuous units. [Pg.319]

Again, corresponds to the area of a gravity settling tank capable of the same separation performance as the disk stack defined by the parameters included in equation 15. [Pg.399]

Sewage flows slowly downward over the filter medium and the effluent is coUected in vitrified tile underdrains which coUect the filter effluent and circulate air into the filter. The underdrains discharge into a main coUection channel which, in turn, discharges into the final settling tank. [Pg.283]

The oxide exiting either the Barton or ball mill reactor is conveyed by an air stream to separating equipment, ie, settling tank, cyclone, and baghouse, after which it is stored in large hoppers or dmmmed for use in paste mixing. Purity of the lead feed stock is extremely critical because minute quantities of some impurities can either accelerate or slow the oxidation reaction markedly. Detailed discussions of the oxide-making process and product are contained in references 55—57. [Pg.576]

By using sedimentation (settling) tanks, the suspended solids can be removed as they settle at the bottom. Proper coagtilants and flocculants such as lime and altim are utilized to convert the amount of dissolved mtilter into stispended solids. [Pg.417]

Clarifier Settling tank, sedimentation basin, A tank or basin in which wastewater is held for a period of time, during which the heavier solids settle to the bottom and the lighter material will float to the water surface. [Pg.610]

Settling tanks are used to separate low solids concentration suspensions (solid-liquid separation devices usually comprising a vessel containing a single baffle which directs the suspension to the base from where it rises to the outlet, as illustrated in Figure 4.1. So long as the... [Pg.80]

In addition to providing storage for the reserve fluid needed for the system, the reservoir acts as a radiator for dissipating heat from the fluid. It also acts as a settling tank where heavy particles of contamination may settle out of the fluid and remain harmlessly on the bottom until removed by cleaning or flushing the reservoir. Also, the reservoir allows entrained air to separate from the fluid. [Pg.605]
