Suspended solids removal

Effluents from paper mills contain solids and dissolved substances. Solids (fibers, fillers) are mostly removed from the effluent in a chemo-mechanical clarification process by the use of flocculants. The degradation of dissolved organic substances is performed in aerobic and anaerobic biological treatment plants. [Pg.423]

Chemo-mechanical clarification of effluents is carried out almost exclusively in sedimentation plants (round and rectangular basin with bottom sludge removal) as shown in Fig. 10.1. Only in a few cases it is necessary to neutralize the effluents. Rakes for the separation of coarse material and sand traps are seldom used. The clarifying efficiency of sedimentation plants is increased considerably by the use of flocculants. Undissolved substances are removed with an efficiency exceeding 90%. [Pg.423]

Suspended Solids Removal. Depending on the concentration and characteristics of the suspended soflds, they can be removed by filtration, flotation, or sedimentation. Coarse soflds are removed by screening. Settleable suspended soflds are removed in a clarifier, which may be circular or rectangular. The efficiency of soflds removal is a function of the overflow rate (m /-d (gal/ft -d) as shown in Figure 5. [Pg.182]

Aluminum based chemicals have been used for many years in wastewater treatment applications for suspended solids removal. These include dry and liquid alum, with sodium aluminate used in activated sludge plants for phosphorus removal. [Pg.91]

The water is then pumped through series operated sand filters, which provide the final stage of suspended solids removal and protect the garnualr activated carbon (GAC) filters from particulate contamination. Series operated GAC filters are then used to remove the dissolved creosote and pesticides from the water. To achieve compliance with specifications levels, water should be sampled and analyzed after leaving the first GAC filter. The second GAC filter normally serves as a guard bed. [Pg.418]

Membrane treatment is a very effective technology used in a broad range of applications. It has been used for desalinization, specific ion removal, nutrients and suspended solids removal, and nowadays plays an important role in removal of trace-level organic contaminants dissolved in water. It is a very advantageous... [Pg.53]

Because of the limitations in gravity separator design, the lower limit of free oil in API separator effluent is usually around 50 mg/L. Removal of other contaminants in an API separator is highly variable. Table 16 shows typical removal efficiencies of oil separator units for several contaminants [17]. Chemical oxygen demand removal efficiencies range from 16 to 45%, and suspended solids removal ranges from 33 to 68%. [Pg.281]

Depending on the characteristics of the CMP waste and the environmental discharge permits negotiated with the local authorities, some steps (such as control of suspended solids removal) may not be required, but every CMP waste treatment system requires a method for removing the trace metals. The rest of this chapter will discuss each aspect of the waste treatment system and the pros and cons of combining the unit operations to create a functional treatment system. [Pg.632]

Microscreening is a method of filtration that uses fabric as the filtering medium. Microscreens (microstrainers) usually consist of a special metallic or plastic fabric mounted on the periphery of a revolving drum. The untreated water flows into the drum and radiates outward through the microfabric, leaving behind the suspended solids removed by the cloth. The solids retained on the inside of the rotating screen are carried upward to a row of backwash jets that flush them into a hopper, which is mounted on a hollow axle of the drum, for return to the treatment plant. [Pg.192]

In addition to disinfection, ozone has been used in municipal wastewater treatment to enhance biodegradability of recalcitrant organic chemicals, control odor, improve suspended solids removal, improve the performance of granular activated carbon, and condition sludge. ... [Pg.1996]
