All but a dozen or so of the publications mentioned have been seen by the. author. Among the libraries which have been used are those of the British Museum and Patent Office in London, of the Universities of Cambridge London, and Manchester, the Cambridge Philosophical Society, some Departs mental Libraries in Cambridge, the Chemical and Geological Societies in London, and in the case of Russian publications the Society for Cultural Relations between the Peoples of the British Commonwealth and the U.S.S.R., in London. The staffs of all the libraries have, without exception, rendered the most willing, courteous, and expert assistance to the author, and he cannot adequately thank them for this. [Pg.458]

We address the uncertainty of predicting the future by grounding our efforts in a theory of the development of late-modern societies and the related long-term deployment of the infrastructures such societies build to support themselves. We will present historical data on the sociotechnological infrastructures that the modernizing United States built during the twentieth century. Such histories could also be constructed for much of the former British Commonwealth, Europe, Japan, and more recently much of the rest of Asia. We would argue that modem societies are unlikely to deviate from these historical trajectories except in the case of catastrophic events. [Pg.33]

In Great Britain the Journal of Dairy Research and the Journal of the Society of Dairy Technology are standard sources. Germany has several journals devoted to dairy science. An examination of the List of Periodical Literature regularly searched by the staff of the Commonwealth Bureau of Dairy Science (6) reveals that scientific dairy journals appear in about a dozen foreign countries. Naturally papers of dairy interest will also appear in numerous journals of a more general nature. [Pg.261]

An interesting discussion of the tension between the gift and the commodity economies can be found in the recent book, Who Owns Academic Work, by Corynne McSherry (2001). McSherry traces the history of the concept of authorship and the relationship between the commonwealth of ideas and an individual creation. This tension also exists in science where every discovery is based on a wealth of prior research. In contemporary society, intellectual property right is an area where ethics, public policy, and law become strongly entangled (Nelkin 1984). [Pg.167]

After steady advances in anatomy and physiology, the dawn of the nineteenth century found European and American society confronted with a dilemma. As medical schools multiplied, the demand for corpses as instructional materials for students and surgeons escalated. Because the legal supply of cadavers was unable to meet this demand, a brisk business in black market cadavers arose. Resurrectionists dug up recently interred bodies and even manufactured cadavers by euthanizing vagrants. In 1831, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and in 1832, the British Parliament passed the so-called Anatomy Acts, which permitted the use of unclaimed bodies for dissection by specially licensed teachers. [Pg.6]

The science of animal nutrition continues to advance and this has necessitated, to varying degrees, the updating of most chapters. In particular the new developments in dairy cow nutrition in the Feed into Milk System and the new nutrient requirements of pigs proposed by the British Society of Animal Science have been incorporated in the middle chapters and the Appendix tables. In addition new information, published in recent reviews of nutrient requirements by the National Research Council of the United States, and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation of Australia has been included. [Pg.13]
