Sheet preparation

The production of a rubber lining includes the preparation of the rubber compound followed by processing to form the lining sheet, substrate preparation, lining application, vulcanisation and inspection. All these stages require thorough quality control, especially compound manufacture and sheet preparation, as chemical resistance depends on satisfactory dispersion of the individual ingredients and undetected flaws in the sheet will cause problems in service. 

Paints have their own individual data sheets, prepared by the manufacturer as the result of extensive testing including laboratory tests, field trials and experience in use. These instructions should be followed closely in respect of type of application equipment, operating air pressure, tip size, pot life, curing time at various temperatures, recoating interval, etc. The inspector should have the data sheets available at all times and refer to them.

Even though cellulose fiber mats are discontinuous rather than homogeneous films, a sheet prepared from well mascerated cellulose fibers will exhibit this same response to water as does PVA. A more detailed treatment of cellulose fiber water interactions has been given elsewhere (5).

To investigate food preferences by insects or other herbivores, such as deer (Rautio et al. 2008), and the compounds responsible for their choices, these compounds can be added to their diet and tested in feeding bioassays. Here we will add a mixture of phenolic compounds, known as tannic acid, to the diet of homworm caterpillars. The two major sources of critically evaluated data for combustion modelling are the publications prepared by the CEC group [17, 36] and from Tsang and his collaborators at NIST [45, 53-56]. As well, there are a number of excellent reviews and collections of data sheets prepared by Cohen and Westberg [29, 57] in which data for a selection of combustion reactions are evaluated.

There is, however, a large water requirement, estimated to be about 21m /tonne (5,500 U.S. gal/tonne) of newsprint. Assuming that the annual production requirement has been established, one of the first problems faced in process design is to choose a process cycle so that material and energy balances on a time basis can be worked out and all of the necessary flow sheets prepared. Questions related to a 24-hr or 8 hr/day operation and production by sequential batch operation or on a steady-state continuous basis must be resolved.

When both anionic and cationic dyes are being used to produce a particular shade, these colours cannot be added at the same point or via the same dye addition due to co-precipitation of the dyes. In such circumstances the anionic dyes, which have lower substantivity, would be added first to the thick stock, whilst the cationic dyestuffs, due to their high substantivity, can be added later, even after dilution to the lower consistency required for sheet preparation.
