Sheet lining

For many years vessels have been successfully lined with various rubber formulations, both natural and synthetic. Many such vessels have given over 20 years of reliable service. These compounds are still in use today but with the development of newer thermoplastic and elastomeric materials the range of application has been expanded. The newer materials, particularly the fluorocarbons, have greatly increased the ability of linings to protect substrate from corrosive chemicals. However, in order for these lining materials to provide the maximum protection, it is important that the vessel shell be properly designed and prepared and the lining properly installed. Unless these precautions are taken, premature failure is likely to occur. [Pg.19]

Linings properly selected, installed in a properly designed and prepared shell, and maintained will provide long years of satisfactory service. Despite this there are occasionally reports of lining failures that can be traced to one or more of the following causes, all of which could have been prevented. [Pg.19]

For a lining to perform satisfactorily it must have the required mechanical, physical, and corrosion resistant properties to withstand the application. Physical and [Pg.19]

Proper surface preparation is critical. If not done properly, poor bonding or mechanical damage to the liner may result. It is important that surface preparation specifications be followed. A 203.2 mm diameter smooth-bore extruder running a PS resin experienced low rates when extruding to a complicated downstream sheet line. The extrudate flowed from the extruder to a screen pack system and then to a sheet die. The line was able to produce acceptable product but at reduced rates. The reduced rates increased the cost of manufacturing the product and caused the plant to miss shipment dates to its customers. Computer-controlled automatic profile dies with electrical controlled sensors in closed-loop control systems have developed greater efficiency and accuracy to extrusion coating, cast film, and sheet lines. A scanner measures the web thickness and signals the computer, which then converts the readings to act on thermally actuated die bolts. The individual adjusting bolts expand or contract as ordered by the computer to control the profile. The more sophisticated systems measure adjusting bolt temperature and provide faster response time with less scrap and quicker startups.
