Table 2 Hsts some of the physical, toxicity, flammabiUty, and reactivity properties of common chemicals (10,13,42,45—51). Also given are some of the quantities specified for reporting spills and for compliance with legislated requirements. The OSHA regulations require that material safety data sheets (MSDS) be developed for all process materials, so that the ha2ard data can be communicated to employees (52). Characteristics of toxicity, flammabiUty, chemical iastabiUty, reactivity and reaction energy, operatiag coaditioas, and corrosive properties of constmction materials must all be considered ia analy2iag ha2ard poteatials of chemicals and chemical operations. The information to be compiled about the chemicals, including process intermediates, needs to be comprehensive enough for an accurate assessment of the fire and explosion characteristics, reactivity hazards, the safety and health hazards to workers, and the corrosion and erosion effects on the process equipment and monitoring tools. Current material safety data sheet (MSDS) information can be used to help meet this requirement but must be supplemented with process chemistry information, including runaway reaction and over-pressure hazards, if applicable. [Pg.229]

In general, every material safety data sheet should provide the local emergency plamiing committee and tlie fire department in each conmiunity with tlie name of tlie chemical covered, as well as such general characteristics (see Table 2.6.4) as ... [Pg.59]

There are a variety of chemicals that are toxic and used in the drilling fluid makeup. Chromates and asbestos were once commonly used and are now off the market. A mud inventory should be kept for all drilling additives. Included in the inventory are the material safety data sheets (MSDS) that describe each material s pertinent characteristics. The chemicals found on the MSDS sheet should be compared with the priority pollutants and any material should be eliminated if a match is found. The chemicals should also be checked on arrival for breakage and returned to the vendor if defective packaging is found. All mud additives should be housed in a dry area and properly cared for to prevent waste. Chemicals should always be mixed in packaged proportions. Wasted chemicals, ejected to the reserve pit by untrained personnel, can present future liabilities to the operator. [Pg.1353]

The application of appropriate data to product design can mean the difference between the success and failure of manufactured products made from any material (plastic, steel, etc.). There are different sources of information on plastics. There is the data sheet compiled by a manufacturer of the material and derived from tests conducted in accordance with standardized specifications. Another source is the description of outstanding characteristics of each plastic, along with the listing of typical applications. [Pg.32]

Design problems with the other conventional materials of construction are usually solved with the aid of textbooks or handbooks that refer the reader to data sheets where the characteristics of a specific material are listed. However, products designed with plastics involve some special considerations when using these textbooks or handbooks as reviewed in Chapter 2. [Pg.131]

If the medicinal product (s) is currently licensed it is recommended that the current summary of product characteristics (Previously known as the data sheet) is consulted for appropriate contra indications, precautions and warnings. [Pg.83]

Product studies of most major chemicals giving the present projected economic characteristics. It gives the manufacturers production processes, prices, many data sheets, and cunent indicators. It is constantly being revised. [Pg.21]

Because of their beneficial solubilizing characteristics and role in promoting desired reactions, solvents such as 2-methoxyethanol have become widely employed in CSD processes. It should be noted, however, that such compounds frequently demonstrate adverse effects. For example, 2-methoxyethanol is a known teratogen. The reader is encouraged to always review the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the selected solvent and starting reagents. These sheets are typically provided by the commercial vendor at the time of purchase. [Pg.40]

The purchaser will specify the characteristics of the barrier or buffer fluid. Where the required flow, pressure, and temperature are factors, they shall be jointly established by the vendor and the seal manufacturer and shall be noted on the data sheets. When dual seals (as in Items b and c above) are provided, the barrier or buffer fluid shall be circulated by means of a circulating device such as a pumping ring or a flow-through system from an external source (see Appendix D). [Pg.31]

Where oil is supplied from a common system to two or more machines (such as a pump, a gear, and a motor), the oil s characteristics will be speeified on the data sheets by the purchaser on the basis of mutual agreement with all vendors supplying equipment served by the common oil system. [Pg.61]

The criteria and procedural methods for characterising substances with regard to their hazardous characteristics and risk characterisation are harmonised in Europe. There also exists a common European system for the classification and labelhng of hazardous substances and for safety data sheets. Officially harmonised classifications also exist for around 3000 substances. The individual elements of the current system as well as its weaknesses are to be explained in the following section. [Pg.38]

Much later. Directive 83/570 required the applicants to produce a draft Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC) as an integral part of the documentation. In September 1995, an order was made (SI 1995/2321) to the effect that, in the United Kingdom, data sheets were no longer required where a product had an approved SPC and also that data sheets no longer had to be sent to all doctors and dentists prior to advertising. [Pg.484]

Consolidated Diesel of Whitakers, N.C., uses material safety data sheets to screen all hazardous materials coming into the plant (Kohl 1984). The company routes MSDSs through hazardous material and medical personnel during the requisition process. The approval of these individuals is required before a substance is allowed onto the plant site. This ensures that each substance is properly documented and evaluated in terms of its hazardous characteristics prior to its use. This can reduce hazardous waste generation by preventing the use of some materials which would require regulated disposal. [Pg.110]
