Cradle cap is a form of seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp affecting babies aged 1-3 months. The condition is not contagious and can be treated by rubbing baby oil into the scalp, leaving it overnight and shampooing afterwards. [Pg.41]

Unlike seborrhoeic dermatitis, chloasma, acne vulgaris and herpes simplex labialis, furuncles (boils) are not worsened by skin exposure. [Pg.70]

Dandruff is a form of seborrhoeic dermatitis. Management of dandruff lies with the application of a mild detergent shampoo once or twice a week. Shampoos containing coal tar may be recommended however, the use of such shampoos is not first-line treatment. Betnovate lotion containing betamethasone, a potent corticosteroid, may be useful in severe dandruff. [Pg.126]

When a normal diet is followed, biotin dehciency is rare. Clinical symptoms of dehciency are alopecia and cntaneons abnormalities snch as seborrhoeic dermatitis (especially in patients affected by phenylketonnria), periorihcial erythema, and fnngal infection. The main sonrces of biotin are liver, kidney, egg yolk, some vegetables snch as soybeans, nnts, spinach, mnshrooms, and lentils. In green plants and frnits, biotin occnrs in water-extractable forms, whereas in yeast and animal prodncts, it is a hrmly bonnd complex [417]. The variability on the amonnts of biotin in foods is due to both natural variation, bnt also to methodological problems. [Pg.625]

Quiniodochlor is found effective against dermatophytosis, infected eczema and seborrhoeic dermatitis. Orally it is used as luminal amoebicide. [Pg.347]

Biotin (68) is an essential growth factor for many microorganisms, but biotin deficiency is not normally found in man, except perhaps in infants. Its only therapeutic use is in the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis of infancy, but it has been tried for the treatment of some forms of baldness. Another heterocyclic sulfur compound, lipoic acid (69), serves as a prosthetic group in several enzymes but it has not been associated with any deficiency disease and has no therapeutic use. [Pg.156]

Seborrhoeic dermatitis. A chronic inflammatory disease of the skin of unknown aetiology. Spasmolytic (antispasmodic). An agent to relieve muscular spasm, e.g. of the bowel. Synergism. The use of two drugs to produce an effect that is greater than the sum of their individual effects. [Pg.183]

Beare, J.M. et al., The pH of the skin surface of children with seborrhoeic dermatitis compared with unaffected children, Br. J. Dermatol., 70, 233, 1958. [Pg.169]

Evidence from at least one randomized controlled trial (level I) show that 10% urea is effective for the treatment of psorisasis, ichthyosis, and dry feet, and 4 to 10% for the treatment of dry atopic skin and senescent skin. Evidence from another well-designed clinical study (level II) supports the treatment of hand dermatitis with urea. Evidence at level I also exist showing barrier improving effects of urea in both normal and in dry skin disorders (atopic skin, ichthyosis). Furthermore, strong evidence exists (level I) for reduced susceptibility to SLS, but not to other external agents. No evidence has been found for successful treatment of seborrhoic dermatitis, perioral dermatitis, and keratosis pilaris with urea. [Pg.221]

Deficiency leads to conjunctivitis, perleche, sore lips, tongue, and mouth. Additionally seborrhoic dermatitis-like eruptions may occur around the nose, eyes, ears, and the genital area (oro-oculogenital syndrome).113,29 The recommended daily allowance is 1.1 to 1.6 mg.112... [Pg.382]

Dreno B, Moyse D. Lithium gluconate in the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis a multicenter, randomised, doubleblind study versus placebo. Eur J Dermatol 2002 12(6) 549-52. [Pg.165]

Patients with solid organ transplants tend to suffer from oral candidiasis and cryptococcosis, whereas neutropenic patients (chemotherapy because of cancer or bone marrow transplantation) are susceptible to aspergillosis, systemic candidiasis or mucormycosis. AIDS patients - as a general sign of their defective immune system - present with more severe courses of infectious diseases in general, including mycoses like candidiasis, dermatophytosis or seborrhoic dermatitis. [Pg.153]

Seborrhoeic dermatitis dandruff fPityriosis capitis) A proprietary shampoo with pyrithione, selenium sulphide or coal car ketoconazole shampoo in more severe cases. Occasionally a corticosteroid lotion may be necessary. Keratolycics, e.g. Cocois are helpful if there is much scaling. ... [Pg.312]

Lithium succinate ointment also has proved to be useful in the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis, having an effect both on the lipid metabolism of the normal skin fungus, Pityrosporum ovale, which proliferates excessively in this condition, and on the general inflammatory effect, which is the normal response to such fungal attack (212, 213). Further extensions of the antiviral and topical uses are expected and the area is rapidly developing. [Pg.68]

Chlorquinaldol [ban, inn] (Capitrol ) is a hydroxyquino-line ANTIBACTERIAL and ANTIFUNGAL topical agent, which can be used to treat dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis, chlortalidone chlorthalidone, chlortetracycline [ban, inn] (chiortetracycline hydrochloride [usan] aureomycin Aureomycin ) Isa (tetracycline) ANTIBIOTIC. It can be used clinically as a broad-spectrum, normally topical, ANTIBACTERIAL to treat a variety of infections. [Pg.74]

This chapter covers the common scalp conditions that pharmacists are likely to encounter dandruff (pityriasis capitis), seborrhoeic dermatitis, cradle cap, scalp psoriasis and scalp ringworm (tinea capitis). Head lice, another common scalp problem, is covered in Chapter 17. [Pg.183]

Topical treatments for dandruff and mild forms of seborrhoeic dermatitis are the same. [Pg.184]

To clear dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis, the shampoo is used twice weekly for 2-4 weeks, and each application is left on the hair for 3-5 minutes. The condition can then be controlled with weekly or fortnightly use. [Pg.185]

It also appears to inhibit the production of sebum and to have antipruritic properties, making it useful in the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis (see below). [Pg.185]

Seborrhoeic dermatitis (seborrhoea) is the result of accelerated skin cell growth and sebaceous gland activity on the scalp, face and trunk. The condition may also involve the area in and around the ears, the eyebrows and eyelashes. [Pg.185]

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is common in infants, when it is known as cradle cap (see below), relatively rare in children and occurs again from puberty, reaching its peak incidence between the ages of 18 and 40. [Pg.185]

Severe seborrhoeic dermatitis requires diagnosis and management by a doctor. It is characterised by persistent greasy yellow scales extending over part of the face, the eyebrows and creases on either side of the nose. It may extend to the centre of the back, the chest, the armpits and groin. [Pg.186]
