Echinacea was originally utilized by Native Americans as a blood purifier and was used in the treatment of snake bites, infections, and malignancy. Today, echinacea is promoted primarily in oral dosage forms as an immune stimulant that helps increase resistance to colds, influenza, and other infections, although topical products for wounds and inflammatory skin conditions are also available. [Pg.92]

Atopic eczema is a chronic, relapsing, inflammatory skin condition. Typically it is characterised by an itchy red rash (often associated with the skin flexures). It is associated with a family history of other atopic diseases such as asthma and hay fever. Due to the reduced barrier function of the dry skin, eczematous skin can be particularly sensitive to irritants. [Pg.310]

Lead was also used in medicines, and in pastes for the treatment of skin diseases 2,000 years ago. In the nineteenth century some doctors recommended lead acetate and opium mixtures for the treatment of diarrhoea. This was described in early versions of the British Pharmacopoeia (Pil. Plumbi cum Opio). Certain lead salts were believed to be powerful astringents which would help in the treatment of wounds and promote healing. Thus Goulard s extract (liquor plumbi subacetatis fortis, or lead acetate) was still recommended in textbooks in the early twentieth century in dilute form for the treatment of ulcers, acute inflammatory skin conditions, and eczema and as a gargle in tonsillitis. Lead compounds have also been used to treat inoperable cancer. [Pg.138]

Inflammatory skin conditions are sometimes complicated by a coexisting infection, and there are many compound preparations available containing ANTIBACTERIAL or ANTIFUNGAL AGENTS together with an antiinflammatory corticosteroid. [Pg.93]

In the United States, Echinacea is marketed primarily in oral dosage forms (tablet, capsule, and liquid) as an immune stimulant used to help with the symptoms of upper respiratory infections (URIs). It has also been promoted as a general immune stimulant to help fight various other infections. Topical preparations are also available for treatment of wounds and inflammatory skin conditions. [Pg.98]

Rosacea, an inflammatory skin condition causing acne-like papules and pustules. However, there are also redness and flushing of the central facial area and cheeks. The condition usually occurs in young to early middle-aged adults. [Pg.164]

The terms eczema and dermatitis are used interchangeably to describe a range of inflammatory skin conditions of which the principal symptoms are dryness, erythema and itch, often with weeping and crusting. [Pg.173]

The production of pro-inflammatory substances is an important step during chronic painful inflammatory diseases and its inhibition is a target of novel analgesics. The resin of Protium kleinii is used in folk medicine for inflammatory skin conditions. Its effects seem to be mediated by several pentacyclic triterpenes such as amyrin and brein [92], The topical and systemic administration of the extract of P. kleinii and some of its triterpenes has antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory actions, accompanied by reduced neutrophil infiltration and cytokine... [Pg.206]

AH skin lesions, inflammatory skin conditions, broken and/or infective skin must be reported to the responsible department personnel. [Pg.441]

Psoriasis is a chronic proliferative inflammatory skin condition. The severity of the condition ranges from mild focal involvement to generalised exfoliative dermatitis. The clinical course is also unpredictable. [Pg.273]
