Dandruff is a form of seborrhoeic dermatitis. Management of dandruff lies with the application of a mild detergent shampoo once or twice a week. Shampoos containing coal tar may be recommended however, the use of such shampoos is not first-line treatment. Betnovate lotion containing betamethasone, a potent corticosteroid, may be useful in severe dandruff.

This chapter covers the common scalp conditions that pharmacists are likely to encounter dandruff (pityriasis capitis), seborrhoeic dermatitis, cradle cap, scalp psoriasis and scalp ringworm (tinea capitis). Head lice, another common scalp problem, is covered in Chapter 17. 

Topical treatments for dandruff and mild forms of seborrhoeic dermatitis are the same. 

To clear dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis, the shampoo is used twice weekly for 2-4 weeks, and each application is left on the hair for 3-5 minutes. The condition can then be controlled with weekly or fortnightly use. 

SA has keratolytic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, analgesic, antiseptic, and antifungal properties for several skin conditions such as dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis, ichthyosis, psoriasis, acne, etc. [52]. It functions as a hormonal mediator of plant resistance responses to environmental stress and pathogen attacks. The free acid occurs naturally in small amounts in many plants. 

Selenium sulfide is used to treat dandruff and certain scalp infections (seborrhoeic dermatitis). It reduces itching, irritation and redness of the scalp. It is an anti-infective medication and works by slowing tire growtir of the yeast that causes the infection. Its side effects include skin irritation, dry skin, oily or dry hair or temporary hair loss. Hair discolouration may also occur, but it can be reduced by carefully rinsing tire hair thoroughly after each treatment. 

As a shampoo containing 2% w/w ketoconazole for scalp application in the treatment of dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis. Adult dose application to the scalp as a shampoo for 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing off. Repeat every 3 to 4 days for 2 to 4 weeks.
