Adhesives, aciylic

Acrylates are primarily used to prepare emulsion and solution polymers. The emulsion polymerization process provides high yields of polymers in a form suitable for a variety of applications. Acrylate emulsions are nsed in the preparation of both interioi and exterior paints, floor polishes, and adhesives. Solution polymers of aciylates, frequently with minor concentrations of other monomers, are employed m the preparation of industrial coatings. Polymers of aciy hc acid can be used as superabsorbents in disposable diapers, as well as in formulation of superior, reduced-phosphate-level detergents. [Pg.17]

Suspension polymerization also is used, When acrylic monomers or their mixtures with other monomers are polymerized while suspended (usually in aqueous system), the polymeric product is obtained m the form of small beads, sometimes called pearls or granules. Bead polymers are the basis of the production of molding powders and denture materials. Polymers derived from aciylic or methacrylic acid furnish exchange resins of the carboxylic acid type. Solutions in organic solvents furnish lacquers, coatings and cements, while water-soluble hydrolysates are used as thickeners, adhesives, and sizes. [Pg.20]

Therefore, biomimetic derivatives of polyethylene glycol (PEG) are being studied as scaffolds for vascular tissue engineering. PEG-based materials are hydrophilic, biocompatible, and intrinsically resistant to protein adsorption and cell adhesion (Gombotz et al., 1991 Merrill and Salzman, 1983). Thus, PEG essentially provides a blank slate, devoid of biological interactions, upon which the desired biofunctionality can be built. Because aqueous solutions of aciylated PEG can be rapidly photopolymerized in direct contact with cells and tissues (Hill-West et al., 1994 Sawhney et al., 1994), this is an easy method of cell seeding. Furthermore, PEG-based materials can be rendered bioactive by... [Pg.58]

The largest portion of PVAC adhesives in textiles is a binder for nonwovens and fiberfill. Here the rise in consumption was more than eight-fold as a result of the successful penetration of vinyl acetate-ethylene and vinyl acetate-aciylate copolymers. [Pg.25]

Before the 1970s, the pressure sensitive industry was employing solvent-based systems made from SBR or natural rubber. About two decades ago, hot melt pressure sensitive adhesives based on styrenic block copolymers (mainly styrene-isoprene-styrene) and aciylic emulsions were introduced. The reason for these technological developments was to decrease the dependency on solvents. Today hot melts account for about 20% of the pressure sensitive adhesive volume, up from less than 10% in 1975. [Pg.25]
