Drying, adhesives

Oriented strandboard (OSB) resins are quite similar to plywood resins, though they tend to be lower in alkalinity and higher in solids. Sinee OSB resins are sprayed onto dry wood in small discrete droplets rather than applied in glue lines, the problems associated with holding the glue on the wood surfaee are not usually issues of coneem. Adhesive dry-out and loss of flow displace over-penetration as major difficulties. 

In summary, today a multiplicity of different types of plastic is required to be printed, many in compositions with a number of different additives and often in rather complex presentations (such as co-extrusions and laminates). This means in turn that there is need for a variety of approaches to the problems of printing at the speeds required and to obtain satisfactory results—not only in terms of the choice of technique but also the design of machinery capable of handling the pieces of work and of formulations of inks with the correct qualities of adhesion, drying, and colour.

Figure V demonstrates the effect of adhesive dry coating weight on 180° peel strength and rolling ball tack with OH/NCO ratios of 1.7 and 1.3 for Hycar 2103 and Hycar 2106, respectively. Static shear tests run both at room temperature and 70°C show no creep for both systems throughout the thickness range tested.

For food contact applications, EarthFirst PLA film has a good flavour and aroma barrier and air can move freely through the EarthFirst PLA film to prevent fogging on windows and promote swift adhesive drying. Also, EarthFirst PLA film in food applications extends the products freshness and results in a longer shelf-life.

Volatile solvent abuse or glue sniffing, is common among teenagers, especially males. The success of the modem chemical industry provides easy access to these substances as adhesives, dry cleaners, air fresheners, deodorants, aerosols and other products. Various techniques of administration are employed viscous products may be inhaled from a plastic bag, liquids from a handkerchief or plastic bottle. The immediate euphoriant and excitatory effects are replaced by confusion, hallucinations and delusions as the dose is increased. Chronic abusers, notably of toluene, develop peripheral neuropathy, cerebellar disease and dementia damage to the kidney, liver, heart and limgs also occurs with solvents. Over 50% of deaths from the practice follow cardiac arrhythmia, probably caused by sensitisation of the myocardium to catecholamines and by vagal inhibition...

Adhesive-coated expanded PS shapes have been used as an alternative to foam-inplace polyurethane systems (see Section 13.1.3). The shapes are deposited into a corrugated box, covered with a release film, the product added, another sheet of release film put in place, and the carton filled with the adhesive-coated shapes. When the water-based adhesive dries, a pair of resilient cushions surrounds the product.

Because the coated surfaces bond immediately on contact, great care needs to be taken in positioning prior to contact, since re-positioning is nearly impossible. Organic solvent-based adhesives dry faster than water based, but do have health and safety implications requiring careful handling.
